Thunder Win Round One in Rematch with Aeros

April 15, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Making their first trip to Arm and Hammer Park since winning the Eastern League title against the Thunder last September, the Aeros put plenty of men on base, but had precious little to show for it in a 5-3 loss Monday night in the opener of a three-game series.

Akron (3-8) stranded a season-high 12 runners on base in the game, bringing the total to 23 left on in the last two games. It was the third straight loss for the Aeros, who are mired in last place in the EL West.

Tyler Holt's two-run double in the second inning off Trenton starter Nik Turley gave Akron a 2-0 lead. It snapped an 0-10 hitless streak for Holt, and brought in Matt Lawson and Delvi Cid, who had both walked.

Trenton (8-3) tied the game in the bottom of the second when Neil Medchill homered to right off Danny Salazar (0-3). It was Medchill's third of the season, all of which have been two-run shots.

Tyler Austin, the Yankees minor league player of the year last season, stroked an RBI single off Salazar in the third to give Trenton a 3-2 lead, but the Aeros came right back to tie it when catcher Jeremy Lucas lined a hit to right in the fourth to score Ronny Rodriguez to make it 3-3. It was the first Double-A hit and RBI for Lucas, who joined the Aeros on Sunday from extended spring training.

Turley struck out seven hitters, but walked three. All that added up to 90 pitches through four innings and an early exit. Lefty Aaron Dott (1-0) came on to work two scoreless innings to earn the win.

Salazar surrendered a lead-off double in the fourth, and the next hitter, Rob Segedin chimed in with an RBI single to center to make it 4-3. Lucas caught Segedin stealing and Salazar fanned the next two hitters to minimize the damage, but the Thunder had the lead for good.

An insurance run in the seventh pushed the lead to 5-3. Closer Tommy Kahnle played with fire by walking Jose Ramirez and giving up a single to Chun Chen in the Aeros ninth, but seemed unfazed as he calmly retired the next three hitters to secure his second save.

Salazar has now lost his first three starts of the year, after enjoying a career-year last season. He left after five innings. He gave up seven hits and four earned runs, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Quincy Latimore had two more hits for the Aeros. So far on the road trip, he is 8-15, with a homer and three RBI.

The Aeros and Thunder will play game two of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05. LHP T.J. House (0-1) will start for Akron, while RHP Zak Nuding (0-1) is the announced starter for Trenton. Tuesday's game will be carried live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
