Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Curve bats were silenced for the second time this homestand on Monday night, this time by the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 2-0, at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The Curve had five hits on Monday night and had just one runner reach third base.
Starter David Bromberg (0-1) continued the trend of solid pitching for the Curve, tossing five innings of two-run ball in his first start of the year. Richmond grabbed its only two runs of the night off Bromberg in the third when Javier Herrera doubled in both Skyler Stromsmoe and Ehire Adrianza with two down.
Altoona didn't register a hit in the game until the third when Bromberg singled off his counterpart Jack Snodgrass (2-0) with two away. Mel Rojas, Jr. followed Bromberg's single with a lineout to end the inning.
The best scoring opportunity of the day for the Curve occurred in the eighth inning off reliever Tom Vessella. Alex Dickerson singled to start the inning and moved to second when pinch hitter Adalberto Santos drew a walk. With two on and no outs, Gift Ngoepe bunted a ball out in front of the plate that Vessella threw to third to force out Dickerson for the inning's first out.
Andy Vasquez followed with a grounder deep in the hole at short that Adrianza got to and made his only play to third to retire the lead runner Santos. Rojas, Jr. came to the plate after Vasquez and hit a weak ground ball to third and beat it out running to first. The inning ended on the same play, however, because Ngoepe had run around the bag at third and when caught off the bag, broke for home and stumbled before being tagged out.
Kenn Kasparek worked three scoreless innings of relief for the Curve and allowed one hit while Nate Baker also turned in a scoreless frame.
Since the win in the home opener, the Curve offense has scored a total of three runs in four games.
With the losing streak at four, the Curve (4-7) look to get back to their winning ways versus the Squirrels (5-7) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night. It's a Two-for-Tuesday at Peoples Natural Gas Field with two-for-one offers on tickets, hot dogs and small popcorns thanks to Atlantic Broadband.
Taking the hill for the Curve on Tuesday will be RHP Casey Sadler (2-0, 3.27), who has won each of his first two Double-A starts. He'll be opposed by Squirrels RHP Taylor Rogers (0-0, 6.75) in the second of three.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6 p.m. For tickets and more information on the current Curve homestand, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the box office windows at People Natural Gas Field.
