Rainiers Stung Twice by Salt Lake

April 14, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers dropped a pair of decisions to the Salt Lake Bees in the resumption of a suspended game that was followed by a second game on Saturday night, both played at Cheney Stadium.

First on the docket for the Rainiers was the continuation of Friday's game that was stopped with two outs in the top of the fifth inning due to rain. Already trailing Salt Lake 5-0, Tacoma was ultimately downed 8-4 in the contest.

A second, seven-inning game followed and saw the Rainiers come up short again, this time 4-3. Tacoma held a 3-2 edge heading into the top of the seventh, but the Bees bounced back with two runs on two hits off reliever Danny Farquhar.

First baseman Rich Poythress put the Rainiers up 1-0 with his first career Triple-A home run - a solo shot that led off the second inning. He doubled and scored another run in the fourth, and combined to go 3-for-5 over the two games.

Outfielder Eric Thames collected hits in both contests, including a double in the second game. He is currently one of two players in the Pacific Coast League to have hit safely in each of their team's first 10 games this season.

The Rainiers (5-5) host the club's first matinee game of the season tomorrow, April 14, when they take on Salt Lake (8-2) at 1:30 p.m. Left-handed pitching prospect Danny Hultzen (2-0, 2.45) is slated to start for Tacoma in the third game of the four-game set against right-hander Orangel Arenas (0-0, -.--).
