Zephyrs Win Home Opener, 3-1
April 12, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Another home opener, another Ben Lasater home run, and another home-opening win for the New Orleans Zephyrs.
The Z's jumped ahead in the first inning with three runs and made the lead stick, taking a 3-1 victory over the Round Rock Express in the 2013 home opener at Zephyr Field.
A year ago, Lasater hit an eighth-inning grand slam for the Z's to win the home opener. Lasater got to work much earlier this time around, clearing the wall with a two-run shot in the first inning off Round Rock starter Randy Wells (0-2).
The Z's weren't done either. Nick Green reached base on a double while following Lasater's act. Matt Diaz's RBI single drove in Green to extend the Zephyrs lead to 3-0, which wound up being enough for the victory.
The way they accomplished clamping down the Express lineup, however, was not without some adventures.
Round Rock put runners at first and third with none out in the third inning against Zephyrs starter Jacob Turner, who exited the game with an apparent injury after getting Jim Adducci to ground into a fielder's choice that erased Angel Beltre at the plate.
Doug Mathis came out of the bullpen and induced a double play from Yangervis Solarte, preserving the Zephyrs' 3-1 lead.
Mathis (1-0), who was scheduled to start Saturday's game, gave up just one hit in 3 2/3 scoreless innings, struck out three and walked none to earn the win in emergency relief.
Jordan Smith and Chris Hatcher combined to shut down the Express over the final three frames, though Hatcher needed to work around a pair of two-out singles to nail down his third save of the season, fanning Mike Olt to end the game.
Nick Green had three hits to lead the Zephyrs, who also got two hits each from Lasater and Diaz. Ed Lucas singled and scored in the first inning, and has now hit safely in each of the Zephyrs' seven games this season.
The Zephyrs are back in action against the Express Saturday with a first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. With the shift in the rotation, Elih Villanueva is now slated to take the hill for New Orleans against Round Rock right-hander Colin Balester.
