Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates will look to take the season series against the St. John's IceCaps on Wednesday as they wrap up their two game roadtrip to the MileOne Centre in Newfoundland. Puck drop is set for 6 PM. This is the 8th and final the Pirates and IceCaps will play this season, with Portland holding a 4-3 advantage for the season. The Pirates currently sit in 6th in the Eastern Conference with 81 points, while the IceCaps are in 14th place with 66 points. Portland's magic number to clinch a playoff berth in the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs remains 7 - check out the updated AHL Playoff primer here .

The Pirates dropped a 3-2 decision to the IceCaps last night. Portland found themselves trailing by a 2 nothing score in the second, but battled back with goals from Phil Lane and Brendan Shinnimin to tie the game in the third period. However, Ray Sawada redirected a shot from former UMaine Black Bear defenseman Travis Ramsey with 7:26 left in regulation to give St. John's the lead. IceCaps goaltender Mark Dekanich would keep the Pirates off the board the rest of the way to give St. John's their second straight win over the Pirates. Dekanich had 16 saves in the third period. Mark Visentin took the loss for Portland, stopping 20 of 23 shots.

The Pirates need 7 points to clinch a spot in the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs, trailing the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by 3 points for the 5th spot in the east with 2 games in hand, and leading the Connecticut Whale by the same margin for the 6th spot. A Pirates loss tonight would allow the Providence Bruins to clinch the Atlantic Division title.

Tonight's game can be heard on AM 1310 WLOB and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live. The pregame show starts at 5:40 with Jeff Mannix.
