Tacoma Rainiers News Release

FRESNO, Calif. - The Rainiers posted a pair of rallies but came up short in a 5-4 loss to Fresno at Chukchansi Park on Sunday.

Infielder Scott Savastano helped the Rainiers climb out of an early 2-0 hole with a game-tying RBI-single in the second inning. Tacoma fell behind again in the bottom of the inning, this time trailing 4-2, until a Fresno fielding error at second base cleared the way for two runs and evened the game in the top of the seventh.

The 4-4 score held until the bottom of the eighth when Grizzlies catcher Cole Gillespie singled home Juan Perez for the go-ahead run with one out. The loss leaves Tacoma settling for a series split following the club's finale with Fresno.

Starter James Paxton did not garner a decision in his Triple-A debut for the Rainiers. The left-hander struck out six batters over 4.0 innings and surrendered two runs on seven hits without issuing a walk.

Tacoma combined to collect 10 hits in the series finale, with first baseman Rich Poythress and catcher Jesus Sucre each turning in team-leading two-hit games. Third baseman Alex Liddi delivered the Rainiers only extra-base hit with a leadoff triple in the top of the fourth that extended his hit streak to four games.

Relievers Jhonny Nunez (1.2) and Yoervis Medina (1.2) combined to allow three runs on five hits over 3.1 innings. Right-hander Logan Bawcom delivered a hitless, scoreless effort en route to collecting the game's final two outs for Tacoma.

The next stop on the Rainiers season-opening road trip is Sacramento, where Tacoma starts a four-game set with the River Cats at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, April 8. Right-hander D.J. Mitchell (0-0, -.--) is slated to make his 2013 debut for the Rainiers in the series opener against right-hander Bruce Billings (0-0, -.--).
