Hagerstown Suns News Release

SALISBURY, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (1-3) dropped a 2-1 pitchers duel to the Delmarva Shorebirds (3-1) on Sunday afternoon, thereby losing their first series of the 2013 season 3-1.

The Shorebirds plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. LF Anthony Vega led off the frame with a line drive single to right. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Vega was able to score with two outs when 1B Christian Walker singled on a fly ball to left.

Delmarva had been kept off the scoreboard the previous seven innings, as their first run of the game came in the bottom of the first. CF Gregory Lorenzo led off that inning with a walk, and then proceeded to steal second. A groundout to second pushed Lorenzo to third with just one out in the frame. Walker's sacrifice fly to center field brought Lorenzo home to put the Shorebirds ahead 1-0.

The lone Hagerstown run came in the seventh off the bat of RF Brandon Miller. He sent a solo homerun over the center field wall for his first homer of the season. Miller finished the game with two of the Suns three hits.

RHP Travis Henke (0-1) suffered the loss for the Suns. He entered the game to begin the ninth for Hagerstown, and allowed the winning run on two hits in 0.2 innings. RHP Juan Guzman (1-0) got the win for Delmarva, pitching one scoreless inning despite giving up two walks in the frame.

RHP Ronald Pena started for the suns and went five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. He both walked and struck out two batters each. Pena's counterpart for the Shorebirds, RHP Branden Kline, tossed six shutout innings giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out three. The Shorebirds out-hit the Suns 7-3, and Hagerstown committed three errors while Delmarva was error free.

The Suns next head to Lakewood, NJ on Monday to begin a three game series with the Lakewood Blueclaws (1-3). Hagerstown will send RHP Pedro Encarnacion (0-0) to the mound for his first start of the season. He will square off against LHP Yoel Mecias (0-0) for Lakewood. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
