Brahmas Close out Mallards, Advance to Semi-Finals

MOLINE, Illinois - The Fort Worth Brahmas defeated the Mallards by the final score of 1-0 in game five of the opening-round, best-of-seven series Saturday night to eliminate Quad City and advance to the Central Hockey League semi-finals versus the Wichita Thunder. The Brahmas defeated the Mallards four games to one.
After two and a half periods of scoreless hockey, Shawn Szydlowski broke the tie at 9:59 of the third period as he fired a wrist shot from the slot that deflected off of Mallards defeneseman Bob Preece's stick and into the back of the net. For Szydlowski, the score was his first of the postseason since rejoining the club for game three. The St. Clair Shores, Michigan native has notched a point in each of the three games he has played in the playoffs.
Adam Hogg was credited with the only assist on the lone goal. The six-year veteran has recorded a point in three of the last four games.
Brahmas netminder Kristofer Westblom earned his first shutout of the postseason after leading the CHL with four during the regular season. The rookie stopped all 19 shots he faced between the posts, improving to 4-1 in the playoffs.
John Murray made 38 saves on 39 shots in net for the Mallards, but fell to 1-3 in the postseason.
Both teams failed to convert on the power play. Fort Worth went 0-for-6 while Quad City went 0-for-3.
The Brahmas move into the CHL semi-finals to face off against the Wichita Thunder in another best-of-seven series. For the second consecutive season, the Brahmas and Thunder will play to determine which team will move on to the CHL finals.
