Shorebirds Split Doubleheader with Suns

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds split a doubleheader with the Hagerstown Suns on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in front of 6,988 fans. The Shorebirds lost game one, 5-3, and rebounded to win game two, 7-3.

In game one, the Suns jumped on Shorebirds starter Mark Blackmar with two runs in the first inning. Tony Renda and Mike McQuillan hit back-to-back singles and both came into score.

The Shorebirds trimmed the gap to 2-1 in the second. Wynston Sawyer started the inning with a single. He later scored on a single by Anthony Vega.

Hagerstown extended the lead in the fourth inning with two runs.

Down three runs in the sixth, Roderick Bernadina blasted a two-run homer to left-center field to pull the Shorebirds within one run. It was the first home run of the season for the Shorebirds.

Suns reliever Blake Schwartz dispatched of the Shorebirds in order in the seventh to end game one.

Schwartz earned the win while Blackmar was pinned with the loss. Blackmar allowed eight hits and two earned runs.

Miguel Chalas entered in the fifth inning and tossed three strong innings. He struck out five batters and walked two.

Sawyer and Bernadina each had two hits in game one.

In game two, the Shorebirds struck first in the second inning. Nik Balog singled to open the frame. He moved to second after Bernadina was hit by a pitch. Then, Creede Simpson singled to plate Balog. The next batter, Anthony Caronia, singled to score Bernadina. Simpson scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the third inning, the Shorebirds added to their lead. Christian Walker started the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Joel Hutter.

The Shorebirds took command of the game with a three-run fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.

Matt Taylor held the Suns scoreless over four innings in his first start of the year. He struck out five and walked five. Taylor surrendered just three hits.

Mychal Givens earned his first professional win as a pitcher in two scoreless innings of relief. He issued a lead off walk in the fifth and then proceeded to retire the next six batters he faced.

The Suns' only runs came in the seventh inning against reliever Jose Nivar.

Walker went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game two of the doubleheader.
