ST. JOHN'S, NL - The IceCaps dropped their second straight against the Toronto Marlies Saturday night in a 4-2 loss at Mile One Centre.
Despite a late push, the IceCaps fell short in the end in suffering their 18th loss on home ice this season. Eric O'Dell had two goals, pushing his team-lead to 28, while Eddie Pasquale provided a solid effort between the pipes for St. John's, making 31 saves.
Spencer Abbott notched the winner for Toronto and Garret Sparks made 23 saves in his first professional start to capture the victory.
St. John's got off on the right foot with a goal just 3:27 after the opening faceoff. Kael Mouillierat got the puck to Ben Chiarot back at the point, whose shot was tipped nicely by O'Dell and past Sparks to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Toronto wasted no time tying the score. On a power play after a tripping penalty to Julian Melchiori, Brad Ross fed Stuart Percy in the slot and the rookie defenceman slammed home his first pro goal to knot the game at one apiece.
The Marlies jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the second on a goal by Abbott. Greg McKegg sent a pass in the slot to Abbott, who one-timed a well-placed shot that beat Pasquale high on the blocker side.
Then at 3:12, the Marlies capitalized on a turnover in the neutral zone to make it 3-1. Sam Carrick gained the offensive zone and lost the puck but a trailing Kenny Ryan picked up the biscuit and moved in tight, going backhand to beat Pasquale to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.
The IceCaps narrowed the gap to 3-2 with 1:06 to go in regulation on O'Dell's second of the game. With Pasquale on the bench for the extra attacker, O'Dell deflected a Will O'Neill point shot past Sparks to give the Mile One faithful hope of forcing overtime for the second night in a row.
However, Greg Scott iced it with an empty-netter to seal the win.
The IceCaps resume their six-game home stand with a pair of contests against the Portland Pirates Tuesday and Wednesday. Notes: Eric O'Dell has scored in back-to-back games since his club record six-game goal streak came to an end on Mar. 30. O'Dell led the club with eight shots on goal. Prior to the game, O'Dell was presented his award for being named Player of the Week for the period ending Mar. 17... Kael Mouillierat extended his assist streak to three games and dropped the gloves with Dylan Yeo in the second period... St. John's failed to score on the power play for the third straight game (0-for-2) while Toronto went 1-for-3... The IceCaps play the Marlies twice more this season, on April 20 and 21 at Ricoh Coliseum, the final two games of the season.
