Mathews, Streich Lead Snappers to First Win of 2013

April 6, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -Ryan Mathews went 3-for-3 and drove in both runs for the Beloit Snappers as they snuck past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 2-1, at Perfect Game Field in Midwest League action on Saturday afternoon.

The Snappers initial triumph of the season is also the first win in professional baseball for manager Ryan Christenson, who sees his team up their record to 1-2. The Kernels fall to 2-1.

Mathews' (3-3, HR, 2 RBI, run) assault on Cedar Rapids pitching began in his very first at-bat. Following a double by Sam Roberts (2-4, run), Mathews smacked a two-bagger of his own into left field for an RBI and a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, Mathews led-off against starter Mason Melotakis(0-1) and drilled a solo homer over the center field wall. He added a walk in the sixth and a single in the eighth to complete a perfect day at the plate.

Starter Seth Streich (1-0) was entrusted with the lead and pitched brilliantly. Through five innings, he held the Kernels scoreless and permitted only two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

In the sixth, Tucker Healy entered the game in relief of Streich and continued the theme of strong Snappers pitching by setting down the first eight men he faced in order. Candido Pimentel ended the streak there with a single and a double by the next batter, Jorge Polanco (1-4, RBI), scored him to cut the deficit in half. Chris Lamb then took over on the mound and slammed the door. Lamb finished off the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth for his first save and his team's first win.

Beloit and Cedar Rapids finish up their season-opening four game series on Sunday. The scheduled first pitch time is 2:05pm and the scheduled starters are RHP Vince Voiro (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for the Snappers and RHP Tyler Duffey (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for the Kernels.
