Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs picked up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 4-3 win in 13 innings over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The win moves the Chiefs to 1-2 on the young season heading into Sunday's series finale.

With two outs in the bottom of the 13th, Casey Rasmus singled to right, his third hit of the game. Rasmus stole second on the first pitch by Taylor Mangum to Michael Swinson. Swinson worked the count full and hit a one-hop shot to third base that deflected off the glove of third baseman Jose Sermo and bounced into the outfield grass. Rasmus never broke stride and got his left hand on the plate before the tag as the Chiefs won the game 4-3.

Wisconsin built a 3-0 lead against Tyrell Jenkins and the Chiefs. Jenkins retired the first seven Rattlers before Alfredo Rodriguez and Michael Reed singled in the third. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet and Rodriguez scored on an error for a 1-0 lead. Orlando Arcia singled home Reed for a 2-0 lead before Jenkins got out of the inning. Rodriguez singled to start the fifth and scored on a double by Taylor for a 3-0 lead.

The Chiefs left two on against Brent Suter in the first inning and left a runner at second in the second. They finally broke through in the fifth with a two-out rally. Rasmus got it started with an infield single to third and Swinson drove him in with a double to center over the head of Taylor.

Patrick Wisdom led off the sixth with a double down the left-field line against reliever Rodolfo Fernandez. David Washington doubled off the left-field wall to score Wisdom and cut the Wisconsin lead to 3-2. Washington was caught between second and third for the first out of the inning and the next two batters grounded out.

The Chiefs got even in the seventh though another miscue on the bases prevented Peoria from taking the lead. Alex Mejia led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Nick Martini singled Mejia to third and Rasmus tied the game with a single to right. With two on and nobody out, Martini was picked off second by Wisconsin catcher Clint Coulter. Rasmus stole second but got no further as Wisconsin escaped the inning.

Both teams had chances to win the game in the next four innings. Peoria left a runner at third in the ninth, runners at first and second in the 10th and the bases loaded in the 12th. Wisconsin left runners at second and third in the 10th and at second in the 12th setting the stage for the Chiefs win in the 13th.

Jenkins allowed three runs on five hits over five innings while walking two and striking out one. Joe Donofrio threw three hitless and shutout innings with one walk issued and two strikeouts. Jhonny Polanco threw two shutout innings and allowed a hit while striking out one. Dixon Llorens (1-1) earned the win with three shutout innings and three strikeouts.
