Cyclones Win Marathon in Double OT over Toledo, 2-1

April 5, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

TOLEDO, Ohio - Mike Embach netted the game-winning goal at 4:58 of double overtime to lift the Cyclones (1-0 Playoffs) to a thrilling 2-1 win over the Toledo Walleye (0-1 Playoffs) in front of 4,042 at Huntington Center on Friday night. The victory gave Cincinnati a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

The Walleye netted the game's first goal as Trevor Parkes one-timed home his first of the postseason at 6:45 after a feed from the corner to make it 1-0. However, the Cyclones answered right back at 8:28 as Mike Embach snapped home the game-tying strike from inside the left circle over the pad of Kent Simpson (OTL, 36 saves, 0-1 postseason) to even things at one. And thanks to some great first period goaltending by Michael Houser (W, 37 saves, 1-0 postseason) the teams stayed deadlocked after 20 minutes.

The evenly played series opener continued throughout the rest of regulation, as both goaltenders remained unbeaten and forced the game into overtime. The trend continued in the first sudden-death session as Houser made 13 saves and Simpson turned aside nine during the twenty-minute stanza, meaning a second overtime session was required.

The Cyclones jumped right out of the gate in double overtime with some great chances on Simpson, but none lit the lamp. That was until 4:58; after Jeff Foss rushed up the middle and fired a shot from the high slot, a big rebound was left in the right circle for Embach, who buried his second goal of the night and first career playoff game-winning strike to send the Cyclones to a 2-1 victory. Cincinnati improved to 7-5 all time in playoff overtime games.
