Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - A chilly evening at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark unfolded into a pitchers' duel Friday night, and the Quad Cities River Bandits capitalized on three Kane County Cougars errors to score four unearned runs in a 4-1 victory.

Top Astros pitching prospect Lance McCullers scattered four hits without walking a batter and struck out five in five shutout innings. He left with a 1-0 lead thanks to a second-inning error by Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach. McCullers escaped his only jam - runners at first and second in the fifth - by fanning Cougars right fielder Bijan Rademacher and center fielder Trey Martin to end his outing.

Right-hander Daniel Minor (1-0) relieved McCullers and allowed the tying run in the seventh inning, when third baseman Jeimer Candelario hit a leadoff single and scored on a double by designated Rock Shoulders. A relay by River Bandits right fielder Ariel Ovando to second baseman Joe Sclafani and third baseman Rio Ruiz put out Shoulders as he tried to stretch his hit to a triple.

Quad Cities (2-0) quickly answered by taking the lead for good in the top of the eighth, as Sclafani drew a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice by center fielder Teoscar Hernandez. After shortstop Carlos Correa drew a walk, first baseman Jesse Wierzbicki hit a chopper toward second baseman Wes Darvill. But the Cougars fielder threw high to shortstop Marco Hernandez at second base, allowing Sclafani to race home for the go-ahead run. Two batters later, Ruiz drove a double to the left field wall that brought in two runs and extended the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, Minor ran into trouble with consecutive one-out singles by left fielder Pin-Chieh Chen and shortstop Marco Hernandez. Minor gave way to left-hander Kyle Hallock, who struck out Vogelbach and retired third baseman Jeimer Candelario on a flyout to center field.

Kane County (0-2) brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning against right-hander John Neely with a walk to catcher Chadd Krist and a single by second baseman Wes Darvill, who led the Cougars with three of the team's 10 hits. Neely put away the Cougars by retiring Rademacher on a groundout and Martin on a flyout to left field.

The River Bandits and Cougars continue their series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Left-hander Colton Cain and right-hander Mike Hauschild are the scheduled tandem for Quad Cities against Cougars right-hander Jose Arias. The free live broadcast will be available at www.riverbandits.com.
