Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-After both playing their final collegiate games last weekend during the NCAA tournament, former Waterloo Black Hawk teammates Patrick Wey and Eriah Hayes inked NHL contracts Friday.
In 2008/09, Wey and Hayes each skated for the Hawks, helping Waterloo to a 37-20-3 record, the third-highest victory total in modern franchise history. Wey's new contract is a two-year agreement with the Washington Capitals, who drafted him in 2009. Hayes signed with the San Jose Sharks.
Over four seasons at Boston College, Wey won NCAA championships in 2010 and 2012 as a freshman and junior. The Pittsburgh native recorded 13 points - a career best - during his senior season, while also being named the Best Defensive Defenseman in the Hockey East Conference. He spent two seasons in Waterloo, skating in 93 USHL regular season games, and tallying eight goals and 32 assists. Wey dressed for eleven additional playoff games as a Black Hawk, including two contests during the 2008 Clark Cup Finals. The Capitals chose him in the 4th Round of the 2009 Draft, 115th overall, following his second season in Waterloo.
Hayes came to the Cedar Valley in 2008 as a 20-year-old without a college commitment. The La Crescent, Minnesota, native finished third on the 2008/09 Black Hawks with 27 goals, behind only current Nashville Predator Craig Smith and Atlanta Thrashers draft pick Jordan Samuels-Thomas. His year with the Hawks included two hat tricks and five game-winning goals, and in December 2008, Hayes committed to Minnesota State-Mankato. Once on campus, he continued to fill the net; his four seasons included 47 goals in 145 games, 20 of them this season. Hayes was a power play presence for the Mavericks, scoring 13 goals on the advantage in 2012/13, second-most in college hockey.
Waterloo alumni have appeared for both the Capitals and Sharks previously. Forward Joe Pavelski has played for San Jose since 2006. Defenseman John Gruden and forwards Chris Ferraro and Peter Ferraro have all worn Washington sweaters. Four former Hawks have appeared in NHL games this winter. In addition to Pavelski for the Sharks and Smith with the Predators, the others are Andrew Alberts (Vancouver Canucks) and Mark Eaton (Pittsburgh Penguins).
