Top 35 Admirals of All-Time: #3 Darren Haydar

April 5, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release

Milwaukee, WI-- The Milwaukee Admirals are proud to debut of the Top 35 Admirals of All-Time as the team celebrates 35 years of professional hockey, presented by BMO Harris Bank. Each week during the remainder of the season the Admirals will announce new members of the list until the top slot is awarded on Tuesday, April 16th.

In the history of the American Hockey League very few players can lay claim to the list of accolades and achievements that have been garnered upon Ontario native Darren Haydar. He is a two-time Calder Cup champion, the AHL's all-time leader in playoff goals (63), playoff assists (80), and playoff points (143). For his time with the Milwaukee Admirals he may well go down as the best player on the best teams in team history. While he may never have been given the chance to prove himself at the next level; he has remained humble and continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the AHL.

"I'm still playing hockey for a living and you can't beat that as far as I'm concerned," said Darren Haydar. "I still get so much joy playing this game. I'm competitive and that's what keeps me going."

Darren Haydar was a product of the University of New Hampshire hockey system. He spent four years at the University, 1998-2002, and finished his career there as its second all-time goal scorer (102), as well as finishing third all-time for points (219) and assists (117). After his freshman season with New Hampshire, he was selected in the ninth round (248th overall) of the 1999 NHL entry draft by the Nashville Predators.

"[Darren Haydar] is a really good man," said current Nashville Predators defenseman Kevin Klein. "A very skilled player. He had a few chances at the NHL, but maybe not as many as he deserved. He had a lot of skill, great vision, and a great passion for the game."

Haydar would officially join the organization when he was assigned to the Predators' AHL affiliate the Milwaukee Admirals. At the time, it wasn't even certain he would play at the AHL level. Considering Darren was a late round draft pick, as well as one of the smaller players (5'9") in training camp, it wasn't a given that he would make the starting day roster. Yet, as would be his trademark, his work ethic and dedication put him through to the 2002-03 Admirals roster. From there he would storm out of the gates and finish with an incredible rookie campaign: 29 goals and 46 assists for a total of 75 points in 75 games played. Darren Haydar was honored for his efforts by receiving the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial award as 2002-03 AHL Rookie of the Year.
