Admirals Sign Forward Steven Whitney to Amateur Tryout Contract

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks, announced today that they have signed forward Steven Whitney to an Amateur Tryout Contract and that the Ducks have reassigned goaltender Marco Cousineau to the Admirals from the ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets.

A 5-foot-7, 167-pound forward, Whitney played in 160 collegiate games as a member of the Boston College Eagles. In those games, Whitney netted 55 goals and 128 points while also recording 203 penalty minutes (PIM). Whitney was a member of two NCAA Championship squads at Boston College (2010, 2012).

In the 2012-13 season alone, the native of Reading, Massachusetts, netted 26 goals for the Eagles, which was good for second in the NCAA. Capping off a senior season that saw him post 45 points in 38 games, Whitney won the Walter Brown Award, which is given annually to the top American-born college hockey player. He was also named a 2012-13 NCAA Division I All-Star.

As a junior at Boston College, Whitney recorded seven points (4g, 3a) in eight postseason games, which was enough to earn him All-Tournament honors at the NCAA Tournament's Frozen Four in Tampa, Florida. During his freshman season with the Eagles, Whitney suited up for all 42 games and twice earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week recognition.

Cousineau, 6-foot-0, 195-lbs., rejoins the Admirals after appearing in 11 games with the ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets this season. He went 3-7-0-0 with a 3.55 goals-against average (GAA) and .886 save percentage (SV%) in those games. In 56 career ECHL games between the Komets and Elmira Jackals, Cousineau has a 24-24-4-1 record with a 3.30 GAA and .895 SV%. He has also had two stints with Norfolk this season, but has not seen any action with the Admirals.

Cousineau, 23 (11/9/89), made his American Hockey League (AHL) debut with Syracuse in 2011-12, going 3-2-0 with a 3.32 GAA and .904 SV% in six games. Cousineau won his first three games with Syracuse, including his AHL debut on Jan. 13 at Binghamton (W, 5-2). The St. Lazare, Quebec native, who appeared in one ECHL game with Elmira on Nov. 4 at Trenton, played the remainder of the season with Allen of the Central Hockey League (CHL), posting a 16-4-4 record with three shutouts, a 2.53 GAA and .918 SV%.

Selected by Anaheim in the third round (83rd overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Cousineau made his professional debut with Elmira in 2010-11, posting a 21-16-5 record with a 3.23 GAA and .898 SV%. The 6-0, 195-pound goaltender played four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 2006-10, going 84-67-12 with a 3.11 GAA and .897 SV% in 176 games. In 2007-08, Cousineau led the QMJHL in wins, finished fourth among league goaltenders in GAA and was also named to the QMJHL Second-Team All-Star squad.

The Admirals will conclude the home portion of their regular season schedule with contests against the Binghamton Senators tomorrow and Saturday nights at Norfolk Scope Arena. The puck drops on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday night at 7:15 p.m.
