Roach, who San Diego acquired in a May 2012 trade with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, will take the hill on opening night (Thursday, April 4) against the Tulsa Drillers. The 23-year- old hurler had a terrific 2012 season, finishing 11-2 with a 1.88 ERA in 18 games (16 starts) between Inland Empire (High-A), Lake Elsinore (High-A) and San Antonio (Double-A). Last season, Roach was named Texas League Pitcher of the Week for July 2-8.
Portillo returns to San Antonio after making his final eight starts in 2012 with the Missions. Prior to arriving at the Double-A level, the 21-year old went 6-6 with a 1.87 ERA, while striking out 107 in 126.2 innings for Low-A Fort Wayne.
Andriese, Smith, Stites and Quackenbush will all be making their Double-A debuts in 2013.
Last season, Andriese went 10-8 with a 3.58 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) for Lake Elsinore. The Redlands, CA native was selected by the Padres in the third round of the 2011 draft out of the University of California-Riverside.
Smith, who played his college ball at Oklahoma, had an impressive first full professional season in 2012 for Lake Elsinore. In 26 starts for the Storm, Smith went 9-6 with a 3.85 ERA, while leading the California League with a 5.1 K-BB ratio.
Stites is making the jump from Fort Wayne to San Antonio in 2013 after recording 13 saves for the TinCaps last season. Like Smith, the right hander has shown impressive control in his young career, striking out 60, while walking just three in 49 innings last season.
Quackenbush notched 27 saves for Lake Elsinore in 2012, allowing a stingy 0.94 ERA in 58 innings of work.
On the offensive side, Rico Noel brings his base-stealing prowess to the Alamo City for 2013. The Ville Platte, LA native swiped 90 bags in 134 games for Lake Elsinore last season, which ranked him second in the Cal League and third in all of minor league baseball.
The Missions infield will have a new look this season, with the additions of Chris Bisson, Adam Buschini, A.J. Kirby-Jones and Tommy Medica. Last season in just 93 games for Lake Elsinore, Medica hit .330 with 37 doubles, 19 homers and 87 RBI.
San Antonio opens the season with a three-game series with the Tulsa Drillers (Colorado Rockies), beginning Thursday, April 4 (7:05 PM) at Wolff Stadium. The Missions conclude their season- opening homestand with three games against the defending Texas League champion Springfield Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) April 7-9 before departing on a six-game, eight-day road trip.
