Former Defenseman Nate Schmidt Signs with Washington Capitals

FARGO, ND- Former Fargo Force defenseman Nate Schmidt signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals in the NHL today and will join them Wednesday for practice. He was not drafted in the NHL and therefore was a free agent available to all teams.

Schmidt is the third former Force player to sign a professional contract in the last two days behind Luke Witkowski and Andy Taranto.

Schmidt just completed his junior year at the University of Minnesota and has chosen to forgo his senior year to turn pro. He played in 96 games during his 3 year stint for the Gophers, tallying 74 points with 12 goals and 62 assists. At the completion of the 2012-13 season, where Schmidt had 32 points (9 goals, 23 assists) with a plus/minus rating of +15, he was named to the All-WCHA First Team after leading the league in scoring by a defenseman. He also finished the season ranked tied for third in scoring among all defensemen in the NCAA this year.

Prior to his college career with the Gophers, Schmidt played one season for the Fargo Force during the 2009-10 season. He played in 57 games where he led defenseman in scoring with 37 points, scoring 14 goals and adding 23 assists.
