Philadelphia Wings Get Stung by Swarm 20-11March 29, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) Philadelphia Wings
After trailing 4-1 early in the game, the Wings were able to even things up with a four goal second quarter to tie the Swarm 5-5 at the half. Philadelphia even took the lead early in the second half on a Kevin Ross goal but were unable to do much more after that, falling behind 11-7 in the third quarter and giving up nine goals in the fourth.
Rookie goalie Angus Dineley got his first career start for the Wings as veteran net-minder, Brandon Miller was serving a one-game suspension. Dineley survived an early onslaught from the Swarm but failed to recover in the second half as the Minnesota started the third quarter with five unanswered goals.
Brendan Mundorf played in his first game of the season for the Wings, scoring two goals and assisting on two more; but the return of the forward was not enough as the Wings offense never found a rhythm in the second half. Drew Westervelt and Kevin Crowley led the Wings with three goals, while Kevin Ross had seven points on a goal and six assists, playing his former team for the first time in a Wings jersey.
Miller and rookie defender, Michael Manley, who both sat out the game with suspensions, will return to the Wings lineup tomorrow evening for the second game of the western road trip against the Colorado Mammoth in Denver.
With the loss the Wings fall to 5-6 but remain in second place in the NLL East Division.
The Swarm were led by Callum Crawford and Kiel Matisz, each with seven points. Minnesota goalie, Evan Kirk, recorded 43 saves for an 80% save rate, as the Wings out-shot the Swarm 54-51.
Following this weekend's road trip, the Wings will play another back-to-back series, starting with a nationally televised game against the Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday April 6 before returning home to take on the Swarm at Wells Fargo Center on Sunday, April 7 at 4 p.m. Tickets are available online at WingsLAX.com, by phone at 215-389-WING or at the Wells Fargo Center box office.
