Nationals Acquire Lang and First Rounder

March 28, 2013 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Hamilton Nationals

The Hamilton Nationals announced today that the Major League Lacrosse team has acquired midfielder Roy Lang and a first-round pick in the 2015 MLL Collegiate Draft from the Ohio Machine in exchange for goalie Scott Rodgers, a second-round pick in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft and defenseman Chad Wiedmaier.

"He is a big kid that was a prominent scorer in college and with Rochester. He scored 14 goals last year, which would have been in our Top 5. He is also a versatile player who can play defense and d-middie for us," said Nationals General Manager Stu Brown. "A big part of the deal for us was getting the first-round pick in a very deep, talented draft. We are looking to get better each year."

Lang comes to the "Steel City" after a rookie campaign in which he played in 13 games for the Rochester Rattlers. The 6-3, 205-pound midfielder provided instant offense for the Rattlers, notching 14 goals and three assists for 17 points, and collecting 26 ground balls in 2012. The former 11th overall pick in the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft was dealt to the Machine in the offseason.

Lang excelled at Cornell University from 2009 to 2012, and was a First Team All-American selection as a junior and a Third Team selection and Tewaaraton semifinalist as a senior. In his senior season, he collected 22 points (16+6) and 23 ground balls.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Roy. I saw him play a lot for Cornell and he has played well at this level. His best lacrosse is still ahead of him and I am glad it will be with the Nationals," said Nationals Head Coach Dave Huntley.

Players heading to Ohio are veteran goalie Rodgers and second-year defenseman Wiedmaier. In 2011, Rodgers was third in the MLL with an 11.46 goals-against average and fourth with a .558 save percentage. In his MLL career, he was 6-5 with a 13.21 goals-against average and a .510 save percentage. The former seventh overall pick was a standout at Notre Dame before making the jump to the pros in 2010.

Wiedmaier enters his second season in the MLL after playing in nine games in 2012. He assisted on one goal and scooped up 18 ground balls. The seventh overall pick was a four-time All-American at Princeton after earning First Team honors in 2012, Second Team nods in 2009-10, and Third Team accolades in 2011. He was the first four-time First Team All-Ivy League men's lacrosse player in Princeton history.

The Nationals will kick off their 2013 schedule on Saturday, May 4th against the Boston Cannons. The home opener is set for Saturday, May 11th against the New York Lizards.
