San Antonio Talons Fall to San Jose SaberCats

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The San Antonio Talons kicked off the 2013 season on Saturday, March 23 with a 47-42 home loss at the Alamodome. The first quarter saw only one score with the SaberCats taking the 6-0 lead after a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Aaron Garcia to Huey Whittaker.

SaberCats extended their lead to 20-0 by scoring the first two touchdowns of the second quarter on two Whittaker catches. With just under two minutes in the half, Quarterback John Dutton threw his first touchdown for the Talons after finding Robert Quiroga for a 21-yard touchdown pass. The extra point made by Stefan Demos cut the SaberCats lead at the half to 20-7.

San Antonio scored first in the second half with a 23-yard pass leading to a Jomo Wilson touchdown. The SaberCats answered back quickly with another Whittaker touchdown taking the 27-14 lead. Quiroga scored his second touchdown of the night with a 4-yard pass from Dutton scratching the 'Cats lead to 27-21.The third quarter came to a close on a mishandled Garcia pass, which led to a 54-yard interception return by defensive back Fred Shaw giving the Talons the 28-27 lead.

San Jose opened up the scoring in the final quarter with a fourth Whittaker touchdown. Jomo Wilson's second touchdown of the game came from a 27 -yard pass putting San Antonio back up 35-34. The SaberCats fired back with a 17-yard Garcia touchdown pass for a TJ Watkins giving them the 41-35 lead. With just under two minutes remaining in the game, San Antonio's Dwayne Eley made the score 42-41 on a 7-yard grab from Dutton. San Jose closed out the game by scoring last on a Jamarko Simmons 1-yard touchdown run. The 47-42 'Cats lead held through the final minute of the game.
