Amarillo Bulls News Release

AMARILLO, TX - What a night for Mike Davis.

The Amarillo Bulls forward fired five goals including four over the final 40 minutes to power the Amarillo Bulls past the Wichita Falls Wildcats 7-1. Davis is the first player in Amarillo Bulls history to score more than three goals in a game.

The victory was the Bulls 23rd on home ice and it pulled them into a tie with the 2002-2003 Amarillo Gorillas for most wins in hockey history in the Texas Panhandle. A win on Saturday night in the Bulls home regular season finale would set a new record.

It was a rough start to the game for the Bulls as they were outshot 13-9 in the first period, and surrendered the first goal with just seven minutes into the play. The Bulls scored in the final five minutes of the stanza and then proceeded to score the next six straight.

"I don't think we respected our opponent," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "The Wildcats have a very good hockey team and when they play their style of hockey they're very good. When we turned up the intensity in the second period, and wanted to play Bulls hockey I thought that was the difference."

Williams said many people wonder about the Bulls motivation this time of the year, and he pointed out that the bottom line is to continue to win hockey games.

"Our fans deserve the very best and four us to win," he said. "They are the best fans around. We also have the best hockey environment that we play in. There is nothing I want more than to see them and our players win games here."

Williams said he hasn't seen too many nights where one player dominates and scores five times like Mike Davis did.

"Mike had a very special night for what he was able to do," he said. "I thought Paul Berrafato was absolutely terrific in the first period as we gave up a number of odd man rushes and breakaways."

After falling behind in the first quarter of the game, the Bulls finally got rolling. It was Mike Davis who began his big night with a terrific shot that beat goaltender Evan Cowley. Gage Christianson set up the play with a great pass across the ice. Joe Grabowski added an assist on the play. The difference in the first period was goaltender Paul Berrafato who kept his team in the game with some good saves.

The second was dominated by Amarillo with three goals in a five minute span. Omar Mullan started the offense by pushing home a shot from Blake Roubos and Tyler Gernhofer at 2:55. Nearly three minutes later, Davis got his second when he deflected home a Connor Frey shot Tyler Gernhofer earned his second helper. That goal chased away goaltender Cowley who was replaced by Cooper Cook. A short time after that Davis was at it again when he tipped home another shot, this time from John Rey and Gernhofer with his third straight helper. The Bulls outshot the Wildcats 13-11 in the middle stanza.

The third period featured more of the Bulls offense with two goals 1:13 apart. Both were scored by Mike Davis, his fourth and fifth of the game. Tyler Deresky, Geoff Fortman, Dan McNamara and Hampus Gustafsson collected assists on the goals. Deresky rounded out the scoring when he finished off a rush up the ice from Brady Ferguson.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Wichita Falls Wildcats 40-31 including 18-7 in the third period. There were 11 total power plays with each team netting one goal.
