Rivermen Come up Empty in Milwaukee

March 13, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release

The Peoria Rivermen road woes continued after they fell 2-0 to the Milwaukee Admirals Wednesday evening at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Magnus Hellberg earned his third shutout of the season after making 30 saves, his second shutout against Peoria this season.

The Rivermen have started four of their last five games by allowing their opponent to score first, and that trend continued Wednesday. Milwaukee jumped on the scoreboard during a scramble in front of the net. After a hard play to the net by Brad Winchester, the loose puck found Austin Watson's stick. Watson shot the puck which deflected off of Winchester's stick into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season at 11:45. Mattias Ekholm also earned an assist on the play.

The second period featured multiple side-to-side saves by Mike McKenna as he made 18 stops in the frame. However, after both teams earned penalties, Ekholm pushed ripped a wrist shot over McKenna's glove during 4-on-4 play at 16:46 to give the Admirals a 2-0 lead. Taylor Beck and Watson were credited with assists on the goal.

Peoria used a flurry of shots in the third period to pressure Milwaukee, outshooting the Admirals 12-4. At 12:37, during the Rivermen's first full powerplay, Derek Nesbitt beat Hellberg on the glove side, but the puck hit the crossbar.

Both teams were unsuccessful on all three of their power plays while Milwaukee outshot Peoria 34-30.

The Rivermen end their season-long six game road trip against the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
