Washington Spirit News Release

GERMANTOWN, Md. (Mar. 11, 2013) - A new era draws closer and closer, as the Washington Spirit opened up its inaugural training camp under head coach Mike Jordan on Monday.

With just over 30 days until the inaugural match on April 14 against the Boston Breakers, preparations for the upcoming National Women's Soccer League reached new heights in the D.C. Metro Area.

Players involved in this week's opening training sessions will include both Regular and Supplemental Draft Picks, standouts identified at the recent Spirit Pro Combine, Discovery Pick signings and a few other camp invitees hoping to nab a final roster spot. Allocated national team players Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris, Diana Matheson, and Robin Gayle will arrive next week, each currently involved with their respective national teams.

The team gathered for orientation, collected their gear, and then headed out to the synthetic turf fields for a vigorous warm up and possession exercises before finishing with a 30-minute scrimmage. Reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Year Caroline Miller didn't waste any time easing into life as a professional, rattling off three goals in the affair.

The entire preseason will take place at the Maryland SoccerPlex, the Spirit's home for 11 NWSL matches during the regular season. The 12 year old facility will also host four of the five friendlies against top women's college programs.

The 'Free Spirit' preseason pits the club against Penn State (March 17), Duke (March 14), North Carolina (March 30), on the road against Maryland (April 3) and wrapping things up against Virginia (April 6). Free tickets for each match are available by visiting https://tickets.washingtonspirit.com/.

After the opening match of the season against the Breakers, the Spirit will play four straight games at home, with Western NY Flash (April 20), Sky Blue FC (April 27), Portland Thorns (May 4) and the Breakers (May 11) all paying a visit to the SoccerPlex.
