Americans Beat Heat 5-0
March 8, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Abbotsford Heat News Release
Rochester, NY - The Abbotsford Heat were defeated 5-0 by the Rochester Americans (AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres) in their first of three games in three days against North Division rivals.
David Leggio made 44 saves to record his third shutout of the season, while Brayden McNabb posted three points in the Rochester win. Cody McCormick scored twice in the first period, with his goals coming just 17 seconds apart, to put the Heat behind by two in the first six minutes of play.
McCormick's first goal was scored on the power play at the 5:18 mark. His second goal of the game came at even strength and ended Leland Irving's night at the 5:35 mark of play.
The Heat outshot the Americans 15-7 in the second period, but Rochester scored their second power play goal of the night at 17:40, to lead 3-0 after 40 minutes. Brayden McNabb's fifth goal of the season came on a point shot that bounced off the end boards, bounced off an Abbotsford defender, and bounced into the Heat net.
The Americans added two third period goals, on seven shots, to seal their third consecutive win. The Heat have now dropped the first two games of their season-long, 15-day, seven-game road trip.
Leland Irving made two saves on four shots before being pulled from the game in the first period. Danny Taylor made 19 saves on 22 shots in relief, as the Heat outshot the Americans by a 44-26 margin in the loss.
The Heat did not score on five power play opportunities, and killed off five of eight Rochester man advantages.
Abbotsford will face the Toronto Marlies (AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) on Saturday at Noon PST before returning to Rochester on Sunday at 2:05 PM PST for their final game against the Americans this season.
