Devils Fall to Sound Tigers

ALBANY, NY -- Joe Whitney and Harri Pesonen scored, but the Albany Devils dropped the first game of their three-in-three with a 4-2 setback against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The Devils, who were playing their first game at Times Union Center since Feb. 18, had their five-game point streak halted. Albany is now 24-20-1-10, while Bridgeport improves to 24-24-5-4.
Whitney recorded his team-high 18th tally and Pesonen added a penalty-shot goal. Corbin McPherson and Jay Leach each posted helpers. In goal, Keith Kinkaid made 25 saves on 28 attempts in his return from New Jersey.
Bridgeport's Sean Backman had two goals and an assist, Nino Niederreiter notched his 24th goal of the season and Aaron Ness also scored. In goal, Rick DiPietro made 25 saves on 28 shots.
Whitney opened the scoring at 12:47 of the first when he tipped a point shot from Leach. In the second, Pesonen converted on a penalty shot, going five hole at 56 seconds to double Albany's lead.
From there, Bridgeport netted four unanswered goals. Niederreiter scored on the power play at 7:35 and Ness made it 2-2 at 12:29. In the third, Backman netted the game-winning goal at 16:36 and potted an empty-net tally at 19:42.
Game Notes
- With his sixth goal in as many games, Whitney has a team-leading 18 goals and 36 points. In 118 career AHL games, the second-year pro has 33 goals and 48 assists for 81 points.
- Pesonen's penalty shot goal was the Devils second of the season and first since Adam Henrique converted against Adirondack's Cal Heeter on Oct. 26. For Pesonen, the goal was his 11th of the season, giving him 24 points.
- Matt Anderson and Leach both returned to the lineup after missing some time with injuries. Anderson missed last weekend's three-in-three, while Leach sat out the previous nine contests.
