Jackals Grab Shootout Win Over Nailers

March 6, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

WHEELING, W.Va. - March 6, 2013 - The Elmira Jackals continued to pile up points on the road with their third win in four tries during their five game road trip. They defeated the Wheeling Nailers 2-1 in a shootout on Wednesday night at WesBanco Arena to run their record to 33-20-7.

Elmira's offense was in high gear in the first period to the tune of 13 shots on goal and multiple quality chances. Despite their best efforts, the Jackals could not solve Peter Delmas and found themselves down by one after one. Near the midpoint of the period, Wheeling rookie Max MacKay caused a turnover in Elmira ice and left a drop pass for Chris Barton. Barton's shot beat Maxime Clermont low to the blocker side at 8:26. That was one of six shots that Clermont saw in his first start with Elmira since returning from his call up to Albany of the American Hockey League.

If Clermont was bored during a six-shot first, he may have been even more so in the second when the Jackals' defense clamped down and held the Nailers to just three shots on goal, including none on a late power play. Elmira, meanwhile continued to buzz around the Wheeling cage and launched 14 shots against Delmas. Midway through the period it was a deflection off of a skate in front that led to Elmira tying the game. Working from high on the left wing, Cameron Cooper sent a low wrist shot toward the goal. Kevin Harvey had it deflect in off of his skate for his 11th of the season. Jordan Pietrus also assisted on the marker.

In the third the Jackals were held under 10 shots in a period for the first time on the night and never were able to nudge ahead of Wheeling on the scoreboard. The best chance came when Todd Orlando picked up a double minor for high sticking Harvey. Elmira's power play was held at bay again and it was up to the defense to help get the game to overtime. Clermont stopped each of the five he faced and the Jackals went to overtime for the fifth time in their last nine games.

The sudden-death frame was played at a pretty conservative pace with Elmira managing three shots on goal to Wheeling's one. So it turned to a shootout to decide the winner. Clermont had stopped all but two of the prior 14 shootout attempts he had faced. Tonight he was perfect, and had to be, as Delmas nearly matched him save-for-save. Matt Carter was the only Jackal to score when he lifted a wrist shot over Delmas' glove in the top of the third.

Clermont picked up his 16th win of the season on the strength of 16 saves. The Jackals ended the night 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
