Wing's Alumni Cory Ward Earns WCHA Rookie of the Week

MADISON, Wis.-- The Western Collegiate Hockey Conference (WCHA) announced today that Bemidji State University forwardCory Ward(Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) has been selectedWCHA Rookie of the Weekafter outstanding play in the Beavers' Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) series at University of North Dakota, March 1-2.
Ward led the Bemidji State attack versus No. 6 UND. He had a hand in three of BSU's four goals on the weekend, helping the Beavers earn a point in the road series. Ward recorded the first multi-point night of his collegiate career to open the series Friday, netting his sixth goal of the season to give BSU a 1-0 lead early in the second period. He also assisted on a third period goal in the 4-2 loss. In the series finale last Saturday, Ward added an assist, also his sixth of the season, on Danny Mattson's goal to put BSU up 2-1 midway through the second of a 2-2 overtime tie - its first draw at UND since Jan. 28, 2005. He finished the weekend with a +1 plus/minus rating.
Ward leads all BSU rookies and is fifth on the team in scoring with 12 points (6g, 6a) was a +1 on the plus/minus.
Ward shares this week's rookie of the week award with Michigan Tech forward Alex Petan.
The WCHA award marks the fourth time the league has selected a member of the Beavers for its weekly honor in 2012-13, while it stands at the first time Ward has been recognized by the WCHA during his career. He followsAndrew Walsh(So., G, Dawson Creek, British Columbia), who took homeDefensive Player of the Weeklaurels Oct. 22, Dec. 18 and Feb. 19 of this season. In addition to Ward and Petan, the WCHA named University of Wisconsin forward Michael Mersch itsOffensive Player of the Weekand University of Minnesota freshman goaltender Adam Wilcox earned theWCHA Defensive Player of the Weekaward.
Bemidji State, 6-18-7 overall and 5-14-6 in WCHA play returns to Sanford Center to host No. 2 Minnesota in the final series of the 2012-13 regular season. The two-game set will get underway at 7:37 p.m. Friday with the season finale and senior night slated for a 7:07 p.m. opening faceoff.
