Klamath Falls, Oregon: Tuesday, March 5, 2013: The Klamath Falls Gems are excited to announce the signing of three players from UC Santa Barbara for the upcoming 2013 season. The Gems have signed infielder Peter Maris, outfielder Cameron Newell, and catcher Dempsey Grover.

Peter Maris

Peter Maris is a 5'9" 160 lb. sophomore infielder from UC Santa Barbara. Maris is from Laguna Niguel, CA attending high school at Dana Hills High where he was a 3 year letter winner. He was named All-League after his senior season hitting .294. As a freshmen at UC Santa Barbara he appeared in 34 games starting 26 of them. Last summer Maris played in the WCL for the Cowlitz Black Bears. Gems Head Coach Mitch Karraker said, "Maris will play middle infield this summer for the Gems alongside teammate Ryan Clark."

Cameron Newell

Cameron Newell is a 6'0" 185 lb. sophomore outfielder from UC Santa Barbara. A Roseburg, Oregon native, Newell started his college career at Linn-Benton College. He accumulated a .350 batting average receiving the Big Stick Award (best hitter), 1st Team All Region, Gold Glove Award Winner, and was First Team All NWAACC. "Cameron will be playing all three outfield positions for the Gems and will give us another left-handed bat to use in the lineup this summer," said Gems Head Coach Mitch Karraker.

Dempsey Grover

Dempsey Grover is a 6'0" 185 lb. catcher and an incoming freshman at UC Santa Barbara. Grover attended Beyer High school in Modesto, CA. As a junior he hit .397 with 18 RBI's and 29 runs. Grover was invited to the prestigious Perfect Game Tournament, which features the top players in the country. Gems Head Coach Mitch Karraker said, "A young catcher with unlimited potential, Dempsey will get time behind the plate for the Gems along with UC Santa Barbara teammate Campbell Wear."

"I've had a strong relationship with UC Santa Barbara Coach Andrew Checketts, starting back when he was the pitching coach for legendary college coach George Horton at the University of Oregon," said Gems General Manager Grant Wilson. "I've seen Peter Maris play for a year and he is a slick fielding middle infielder. I'm really excited to see incoming freshmen Dempsey Grover, because only the very best high school players get invited to the Perfect Game Tournament, so he's got serious pro potential" added Wilson.
