New York Red Bulls Scouting Report

The New York Red Bulls return to Buck Shaw Stadium for the first time since San Jose hosted the first leg of an Eastern Conference Semifinal on Oct. 30, 2010. The 2012 MLS Cup Playoff qualifiers boast a potent attack with Designated Players Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill combining with offseason acquisitions Juninho and Fabian Espindola. The Red Bulls were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw against the Portland Timbers during Week 1. Real Salt Lake incomers Espindola and Jamison Olave accounted for the scoring as New York jumped out to a 3-1 lead on the road, but the Timbers tallied twice in the second half to rally for a draw.

Last Game vs. New York Red Bulls

Earthquakes 2, New York Red Bulls 2; April 14, 2012; Red Bull Arena, Harrison, N.J.

The Earthquakes twice fell behind by a goal on the road, but fought back each time to earn a valuable 2-2 tie on the road against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Chris Wondolowski continued his sterling play with a goal and an assist, while Rafael Baca also scored for San Jose. The Quakes fell behind early as Thierry Henry found Kenny Cooper in the box and Cooper finished past Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch for a 1-0 lead. However, San Jose responded quickly with a great combination play. Wondolowski found Khari Stephenson on the right wing and Stephenson crossed it for Baca. Baca coolly hit the back of the net to even the game in the 15th minute. After Dax McCarty scored to put New York ahead a second time in the first half, San Jose again had a response. Steven Beitashour curled in a left-footed cross to the back post, where Shea Salinas slid to pull the ball back to the front of the goal. Wondolowski then headed the ball past Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara for his seventh goal of the season.

Most recently, the Red Bulls took a 3-0 home decision last April 16, with the teams playing to an entertaining 2-2 draw at Stanford Stadium on July 2 in front of 41,028 spectators, the largest single-game crowd in club history ... MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Reserve League: Earthquakes 0, Real Salt Lake 1

Real Salt Lake topped the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 in Reserve League play on Monday at the Earthquakes Training Facility in San Jose. Real Salt Lake (1-0-0, 3 pts.) put the lone goal on the board in the 42nd minute as Joao Plata found Devon Sandoval with an open look at the net. Sandoval slotted the ball past Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham for the game winner. San Jose (0-1-0) had a few chances in the second half including an opportunity in the 51st minute. Alexandre Gonzalez Emerson broke free down the sideline, beating his defender before firing a shot that sailed just wide. The Earthquakes return to Reserve League play on Monday, April 15 against the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field.

Three Join San Jose's Roster

The Earthquakes announced a trio of acquisitions on Friday ahead of their game against Real Salt Lake. The group included rookie signings Adam Jahn and Tommy Muller as well as a trade with Seattle Sounders FC for Trinidadian Cordell Cato. Cato, 20, had one assist in eight appearances during his first MLS season in 2012 for Seattle. The Trinidad and Tobago native also scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 result for Sounders FC against the Earthquakes during U.S. Open Cup play in July. All told, the speedy Trinidadian had one goal and two assists in four U.S. Open Cup matches last year. Muller, 21, was San Jose's first round pick (No. 15 overall) in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. He captained a Georgetown squad that reached the 2012 NCAA College Cup Final in Hoover, Ala. The 5-foot-11 center back was a three-year starter, scoring four goals and recording four assists in 64 career appearances. He was an All-Big East Third Team selection in 2012. Jahn, 22, was a four-year starter for Stanford before the Earthquakes selected him in the first round (No. 15 overall) of the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. The target man had 16 goals and 10 assists in 65 career appearances for the Cardinal. He was an All-Pac 12 and All-Far West Region selection as a junior in 2011 and a senior in 2012.

Debut Efforts

Four players made their Earthquakes debuts in a 2-0 loss against Real Salt Lake on Sunday. That list included starts from former Toronto FC defender Ty Harden and former Portland Timbers forward Mike Fucito. Midfielder Cordell Cato, previously of Seattle Sounders FC, came off the bench in the 79th minute to make his first San Jose appearance while rookie Adam Jahn took the field for the first time in his MLS career in the 83rd minute.

Rebound Performances

San Jose might have lost its first game of 2013, but history shows that the club is due for a rebound performance in Week 2. The Earthquakes are 4-2-2 all-time when playing their next match after losing a season opener. That stretch includes a 3-1-0 mark since the Earthquakes returned to MLS in 2008.
