Delmas Sets Shutout Record, Denying Titans, 3-0
March 2, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
On Saturday night in Wheeling, Peter Delmas etched his name into the team's record book, as he and the Nailers blanked the Trenton Titans, 3-0. With the shutout, Delmas now holds the team record, with nine career shutouts. "It's cool - I mean I never had a record," said the victorious netminder. "I'm just honored I guess. I know there (are) lots of goalies that have been here, (and) it's an old (team), so I think it's pretty meaningful," he said.
With less than four minutes remaining in the opening period, Paul Crowder started the scoring. Chris Barton sent the puck toward the net, before Crowder eventually pushed a rebound past a sprawled out Scott Wedgewood. Max MacKay also snagged an assist, for his first point in two games with Wheeling.
The Nailers' penalty kill was the story of the middle frame, beginning with a two-man disadvantage for 1:34. Not only did Wheeling successfully kill both penalties, but it did not allow a single shot on goal. Later, the penalty kill netted a shorthanded goal, as Cam Fergus scored a breakaway goal, off of a sweet saucer pass by Paul Crowder. "Paulie made a pretty nice pass, and I kind of just closed my eyes and hoped for the best," Fergus said.
The Nailers put the final nail in the coffin with a power play goal from Chris Barton at 5:58 of the third, as he slid in Keven Veilleux's initial attempt from the right circle. That gave Wheeling one of each type of goal (even strength, shorthanded, power play), as well as a 3-0 win.
Peter Delmas was perfect on 20 shots for the Nailers, including a late chance by Kory Nagy from low in the slot. Delmas' shutout was his third of the season and ninth of his career. Scott Wedgewood stopped 37 of the 40 shots he faced for Trenton, but took the loss.
