Hawks Succeed Through Stormy Third

March 1, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Despite a late rally by the Tri-City Storm Thursday night at Young Arena, the Waterloo Black Hawks protected home ice for a 6-4 victory.

Leading 3-1 at the beginning of the final period, Waterloo's Taylor Cammarata blasted his second goal of the contest into the net during a power play at 4:18. Jared Linnell answered at 7:24, maneuvering off the left wing boards and eluding defenders for the marker, but just 92 second later, Brandon Salerno flipped in a shot at the other end of the rink to reestablish a three-goal Hawks margin at 5-2.

The Storm's Michael Vecchione trimmed the advantage again, scoring on his own rebound during Tri-City's only power play at 14:21. Then with an extra attacker on the ice and three-and-a-half minutes to go, Vecchione struck once more, lifting a shot to the top corner after a failed clearing attempt.

Tri-City had trouble establishing possession in the offensive zone and putting an sixth skater back on the ice during the final two minutes, and the Hawks sent the puck the other way, sparking a fight in the closing seconds. After Zach Stepan was knocked down on top of the puck, he and Nolan Gluchowski came to blows. On the ensuing faceoff, Justin Kloos took control and scored into the empty goal from center ice with 7.5 seconds remaining, icing the decision.

J.T. Stenglein had used the accelerator and the brakes to give the Black Hawks a 1-0 lead 16:54 into the first period. Gathering a loose puck at center and crossing the Storm line, Stenglein stopped quickly as two back-checking Tri-City players over-skated him. He then sent low shot from the high slot past goaltender Justin Quale. It was one of 19 chances the Hawks sent toward the net, while limiting the Storm to six in the first 20 minutes.

With a puck free at Quale's left and four minutes remaining in the second period, the Hawks notched their second goal of the night when Cammarata forced the disk over the goal line. Twenty-seven seconds later, the Storm broke up Cal Petersen's shutout bid when Brian Ward's feed out of the left wing corner found Trevor Mingoia alone in the slot for a goal. However, Waterloo went back ahead by two at 17:56 when Salerno created a quality opportunity for Ryan Papa at the top of the crease.

Petersen made 25 saves for his 14th victory of the season. Quale stopped 35 of 40 chances he faced.

After an open date on the schedule Friday, the Black Hawks return to the ice facing Cedar Rapids on the road Saturday. The RoughRiders will pay a visit to Waterloo in turn for the Hawks' next home game on Friday, March 8th.
