Crabs Ink Trio of Players in First Deal of 2013

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs manager Patrick Osborn announced the first official signings for the 2013 roster today. Outfielder Jeremy Owens and right-handed pitchers Jim Ed Warden and Deinys Suarez will all rejoin the Blue Crabs to start the 2013 season.

Owens will again join the Blue Crabs as a player/coach during the 2013 season after finishing 2012 with a .260 batting average, 81 runs, 128 hits, 22 homeruns and 65 RBIs in his most games (133) since starting his career with the team in 2008.

The Johnson City, Tennessee, native, has set franchise highs for the Blue Crabs in games played (616), home runs (96), extra-base hits (225), runs scored (372), stolen bases (78) and walks (276) and led the Atlantic League in hits during the 2009-10 season (28).

Entering his 16th season of professional baseball, Owens was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the eighth round of the 1998 June Amateur draft and has reached Triple-A for the Padres, Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays during.

Right-handed pitcher Jim Ed Warden also rejoins Southern Maryland for his fourth consecutive season. The six-foot-seven, 190-pound Warden finished the 2012 season with a 6-8 record, 53 strikeouts and 11 saves in 64.1 innings.

Through 12 seasons Warden, 33, has collected 128 career saves in 766 innings and a lifetime ERA of 3.71. Warden also finished the 2011 season with the most saves amongst the Atlantic League (28) as the Blue Crabs pitching staff also notched the best overall ERA in the league (4.11).

Warden was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the sixth round of the 2001 MLB June Amateur draft and has Triple-A experience with the Indians, Washington Nationals and New York Mets organizations.

Right-handed pitcher Deinys Suarez will return to the Blue Crabs for his second straight season in 2013 after finishing 2012 with a 5-6 record. In 116.2 innings the 28 year-old Suarez had a 4.47 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 35 games.

The La Habana, Cuba native has also spent time in the Minnesota Twins minor league system in 2011 as a member of both the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats and Triple-A Rochester Red Wings.

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, and play at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland. The franchise will enter its 6th season in the spring of 2013, coming off the team's fourth consecutive playoff appearance.
