Havoc Split With Surge, Fall In Columbus

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Havoc split a fair of overtime games with the Mississippi Surge on Friday and Sunday and fell on the road to the Columbus Cottonmouths on Saturday.

Friday, February 15 - Huntsville 3, Mississippi Surge 4 - OT

BILOXI, MS - Mississippi Surge's Trent Bonnett scored 3:28 into overtime to beat the Huntsville Havoc, 4-3 (OT).

Jeff Grant was all over the ice for Mississippi Surge, as he grabbed two goals in the win. Grant found the back of the net on the power play 9:34 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi Surge and again while 56 seconds into the second to make the score 2-0 Mississippi Surge.

With 31 shots on target during the contest, Mississippi Surge exceeded the 19.7 shots it averages per game this year.

Mississippi Surge also got points from Joe Harcharik, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Adam Stuart and Branden Kosolofsky, who each chipped in one and Kevin Hamel and Nathan Oke, who contributed two a piece.

Huntsville's offense was clicking better than usual and put 29 shots on goal during the game, better than the 19.2 shots per game it averages. The Havoc could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 22 minutes in penalties during the game.

Huntsville was led by Anthony Battaglia, who racked up one goal and one assist. Battaglia scored 15:41 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Chapen LeBlond assisted on the tally. Huntsville additionally got points from Kyle Laughlin, who also registered one goal and one assist. Huntsville also got a goal from Nick Lazorko as well. More assists for Huntsville came via Ian Boots, Aaron McGill, and Corey Fulton, who each chipped in one.

Kiefer Smiley recorded 26 saves for Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors and went 2-for-7 on the power play. The Havoc's Dan McWhinney stopped 27 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Huntsville registered one goal on two power play opportunities.

Saturday, February 16 - Huntsville 1, Columbus 4

COLUMBUS, GA - Andrew Loewen stood on his head and made 34 saves to lead the Columbus Cottonmouths to a 4-1 victory over the Huntsville Havoc.

Huntsville's power play was ineffective against Columbus' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Cottonmouths were led by Tom Maldonado, who had one goal. Maldonado scored 15:21 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Derek Pallardy provided the assist.

The Columbus penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and four majors for 70 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Columbus put 38 shots on net during the contest, more than the 21.7 it averages per game.

Columbus also got a goal from Corey Bellamy as well. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Jordan Braid and Mark Thorburn, who contributed one a piece.

The Havoc racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and four majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. Huntsville had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Havoc stifled the Cottonmouths' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Huntsville relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Kyle Laughlin, Nick Lazorko and Chapen LeBlond took 19 of the team's 35 shots.

In addition, Huntsville received assists from Anthony Battaglia, who had one.

Columbus registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. Team's Bellamy and Sam Bowles were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Jesse Kallechy made 34 saves for the Havoc on 38 shots.

Sunday, February 17 - Mississippi Surge 2, Huntsville 3 - SO

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Ian Boots netted the deciding goal for the Huntsville Havoc in the shootout as Havoc prevailed over Mississippi Surge, 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for 10 attempts between the teams. Mississippi Surge's shootout goal was scored by Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn. Huntsville also got a shootout goal from Kyle Laughlin.

The Havoc came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Huntsville was down 2-0 after a goal by Mississippi Surge's Jeff Grant at 11:41 in the first period. The Havoc knotted things up at 2-2 on a power play goal by Anthony Battaglia at 11:16 in the third period.

Huntsville stifled Mississippi Surge's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 33 shots that the Havoc put on net surpassed Huntsville's average of 19.9 shots per game this season.

Laughlin also scored for Huntsville. More assists for Huntsville came via Matt Smyth, Stuart Stefan, and Brett Liscomb, who contributed one a piece.

Mississippi Surge put 25 shots on net during the contest, more than the 18.8 it averages per game.

Mississippi Surge also got a goal from Kyle Kudroch as well. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Anthony Collins, Kyle VanderMale, and Trent Bonnett, who each chipped in one.

Dan McWhinney recorded 23 saves for the Havoc. Huntsville incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Kiefer Smiley made 30 saves for Mississippi Surge on 32 shots. Mississippi Surge totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-4 on the power play. For Mississippi Surge, Andrew Harrison was ejected from the game.
