IceCaps Flummoxed by Pirates

St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps were beaten 6-1 by the Portland Pirates Sunday afternoon at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.

Portland scored three times in the first period - a deficit the IceCaps were unable to recover from - and received a solid effort from goaltender Mike Lee, who made 30 saves in the win. Chris Brown led the way with a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner, while Michael Stone had three helpers.

Jason Gregoire scored the IceCaps' lone goal with 30 seconds remaining in regulation time. Chris Carrozzi received his first start of the season for St. John's and was peppered with 36 shots, finishing with 30 saves in the loss.

The IceCaps started well in the opening half of the first period but things came unraveled in the final five minutes of the frame. First, Phil Lane redirected a cross-ice feed from Rob Klinkhammer to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead at the 15:35 mark. Then at 17:57, after Julian Melchiori was whistled and sent off for high-sticking, Portland capitalized on the ensuing man advantage when Brown deflected Stone's point shot past Carrozzi for a 2-0 Pirates lead.

With just 57 seconds to go in the frame, Portland found the back of the net once again when Evan Brophey spun and fired a shot from the slot that beat Carrozzi to give the home side a commanding 3-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

Despite some good chances in the second period, the IceCaps were unable to draw any closer after some nice work by Lee, and Portland put the game away in the third. Alexandre Bolduc scored on a shorthanded breakaway to make it 4-0 at the 4:16 mark, followed by Brown's second of the game at 7:40 to extend the lead to five.

Brandon Shinnimin added a goal late to cap the scoring, but not before things got heated. Travis Ramsey and Brett Hextall dropped the gloves at the 13:19 mark, followed by a melee at 14:13 that saw Jason Jaffray and Andy Miele scrap. Finally, Josh Lunden and Darian Dziurzynski traded punches with less than two minutes to play.

St. John's continues its six-game road trip with a stop in Hartford to face the Connecticut Whale Wednesday night.
