Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Worcester Sharks 3-1 this afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Jordan Caron, Craig Cunningham and Trent Whitfield scored. Michael Hutchinson posted 32 saves as the Bruins improve to 30-17-0-3 on the season.
Looking to extend their win streak to four and improve to nine wins in their last 10 games, the Bruins came out with high energy in the first period against their Atlantic Division rival, the Worcester Sharks. After numerous chances in front and pummelling Alex Stalock with shots, the Bruins' forwards were finally able to find the back of the net at 9:31 on the man advantage. Off a beautiful tic-tac-toe set up from Matt Bartkowski and Christian Hanson, Caron beat Stalock back door for his eighth goal of the season and third point on the weekend. The Sharks had their best opportunity to tie it up with two minutes to play, but Michael Hutchinson was flawless and stalwarted the Sharks' attempts with the extra skater. Outplaying and outshooting the Sharks 14-9, the Bruins went into the first intermission leading 1-0.
The Sharks came out ready to play in the second period, but only outshot the Bruins 12-11. However, Hutchinson sustained the Bruins' one goal lead with some incredible saves. The Bruins quickly turned it around, winning 14-of-19 face-offs, including all face-offs in their defensive zone. Their stick work and pressure on the Sharks paid off on the man advantage at 16:45 when Cunningham stuffed the puck past traffic in front and Stalock to put the Bruins up 2-0. Tommy Cross and Graham Mink assisted on the goal.
Hutchinson opened the third period with some text book saves to keep the Bruins up 2-0. Halfway through the frame, Spooner went to the box for interference and the Sharks had possibly their best scoring opportunity of the game, but Hutchinson denied their bid, denying a shot point-blank. Yanni Gourde got the Sharks within one at 17:11 of the final frame, but the Bruins wouldn't relent on the pressure and regained their two-goal lead at 19:43 with an empty net goal from Whitfield to give the Bruins their fourth win in a row.
The Bruins are on the road next weekend. The club travels to Norfolk for a two-game series with the Admirals before heading to Portland on Tuesday, February 26. The Bruins return to The Dunk on Friday, March 1 versus the Worcester Sharks. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. for Pom Pom Night. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive free pom poms courtesy of Dunkin' Donuts.
