Stingers Continue to Build Summer Roster

WILLMAR, MN- The Willmar Stingers have added four players this week to the 2013 roster, including the son of former 25-year major league veteran left-handed pitcher Jamie Moyer.

Hutton Moyer, a 5 foot-11, 160-pound freshman infielder marks the third Pepperdine University athlete to sign with the Stingers in the past four years. During the 2010 inaugural season campaign, catcher Nate Johnson and Joe Sever both played in Willmar.

Hutton's knowledge of the game and versatility has him competing as a freshman for the second base position as the Waves open up the 2013 NCAA Division I season this weekend against University of Western Michigan.

Hutton along with the entire country witnessed his father make history last spring with the Colorado Rockies. Jamie Moyer on April 17, 2012 became the oldest pitcher at age 49 in Major League Baseball history to win a game. Later in May, he broke his own winning-pitcher record and also set the record for the oldest MLB player to record a Run Batted In.

During his long tenure, Jamie Moyer played for eight different major league teams and won 20 games twice during his career, while also being named to the MLB All-Star Team in 2003.

Joining Hutton to sign this week are University of Saint Louis teammates sophomore pitcher Nick Bates and junior outfielder Danny Brennan. Both players led the Billikens to an Atlantic 10 Conference Championship last season.

Bates, a 6 foot, 180 pound pitcher had an impressive freshman last season as his 22 appearances set a school-record. He went 6-1 with a 3.02 Earned Run Average and looks to be a rotation mainstay for Saint Louis this spring. Brennan, a 6-foot-2, 195 pound outfielder also had a great campaign last spring. In 56 games, he hit .282 and posted a .985 fielding percentage, the best among all outfielders on the team.

The final player to round out the latest players to sign is University of Montevallo freshman two-way player Cody Hughes. Hughes was named the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the week last week after recording a pair of saves in the Falcons' series at Saint Leo University on the opening weekend of the season.

Hughes, a 6-foot-2, 210 pound freshman is also a left-handed hitting first baseman/outfielder and will join the Stingers as the second player from this university. Fellow Falcons' college teammate Michael Shreves pitched for the Stingers in 2011 and 2012.

"We are very excited to announce this latest group of players to sign," "We feel these guys can really help us this summer and we like the mix the freshman and upper classman we have so far." Co-owner Ryan Voz said.

The latest four players to sign now bring the 2013 roster to 13 for the upcoming season. The 2013 roster will be compiled of 30 players across the nation and the roster will continue to take shape. Opening Night presented by Marcus Construction is at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29th against the Thunder Bay Border Cats at Bill Taunton Stadium. Tickets are currently available for the 2013 season. Season tickets are $169 for reserved seat backs and $199 for the Gurley's Foods box seat season tickets. The 2013 season is presented by Charter.
