Hitmen Pull Away from Silvertips

Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT - The Everett Silvertips scored the first goal before the Calgary Hitmen finished the game with five unanswered scores in a 5-1 victory over Everett Friday night at Comcast Arena. The Silvertips' winless streak has now reached six games as they look to re-group against the visiting Kelowna Rockets on Sunday evening.

Landon Oslanski scored the Silvertips' only goal on a first period powerplay, giving him each of the team's last three goals over the past three games. Calgary tied things up early in the second before momentum shifted to the visitors for good when the Hitmen killed off two minutes of five-on-three powerplay time for the 'Tips in the second period.

The Silvertips outshot the Hitmen 11-10 and recorded the only goal of the first period, giving them the lead heading into intermission. On Everett's second powerplay of the period, Landon Oslanski opened the scoring on a signature blast from the point that deflected past goaltender Mack Shields at 8:35.

Calgary scored three unanswered goals in the second to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Calder Brooks tied the game on a shot from the low circle that caromed off Daniel Cotton and in. Everett then had two minutes of two-man advantage time when the Hitmen were whistled for two penalties at 3:48, but despite a hit post and a number of close calls, Calgary successfully completed the kill. Spencer Humphries then responded on a powerplay for the Hitmen at 9:47, wristing in a long shot through traffic for the go-ahead goal. Calgary increased the lead just 1:16 later, stealing a puck in the Everett zone before Jake Virtanen tapped in a Pavlo Padakin pass to make it a 3-1 game after two.

Everett couldn't capitalize on a powerplay to start the third period and then saw the Hitmen score again after a Humphries shot re-directed in front to Padakin, who batted it into the net for his third point of the night. Stathis Soumelidis got the crowd going with a good fight against Kenton Helgesen to give the Silvertips some momentum midway through the period, but they weren't able to cut the deficit before Calgary added a late empty-netter in the final minute.

Daniel Cotton (9-13-0-2) stopped 33 of 37 shots faced for the Silvertips while Mack Shields (9-4-0-1) turned away 28 of 29 in net for the Hitmen. Everett killed off 3 of 4 Calgary powerplays and scored once on seven opportunities of their own. Shots were 38-29 in favor of Calgary.

Everett is idle on Saturday night as the players attend the 3rd annual Everett Youth Hockey Booster Club Benefit & Social starting at 5:00 pm at the Edward D. Hansen Conference at Comcast Arena. The Silvertips will then be back in action with an afternoon game against the Kelowna Rockets Sunday at 5:05 pm. The game is also our season ticket holder post-game "Skate with the 'Tips" night.
