MIDLAND, Mich. - Two outstanding student-athletes from the Great Lakes Bay Region have been selected as the January winners of the ESPN 100.9-FM Scholar-Athlete of the Month, presented by Hammer Restoration. Katie Cummings, a two-sport athlete (basketball, soccer) from Mount Pleasant HS, and Austin Jones, a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, track) from Bay City Central, were honored January 29 and 30 on ESPN 100.9-FM's local sports talk show, Crunch Time.
Cummings is a senior carrying a 3.9 GPA. She is a team captain, leader and was a member of the homecoming court. Nominated by head basketball coach Steve Pickens, Katie has stood out the most on the hardwood. She is currently averaging 14 points-per-game, seven rebounds-per-game, and two steals per-game. Katie also posted a triple-double against Flint Northern.
Jones is a senior carrying a 4.1 GPA. He is a two-time captain of the football team and earned a spot on the All-Saginaw Valley League first team during his junior and senior seasons. Austin was nominated by Athletic Director Morley Fraser. Jones is also a member of the National Honors Society.

Each month during the prep sports season, one male and one female student-athlete is chosen for the ESPN 100.9-FM Scholar-Athlete of the Month Award, presented by Hammer Restoration. Winning candidates show excellence in academics, athletics and leadership. Nominations are currently being accepted for future months at ESPN1009.com. Student-athletes must be nominated by a coach, teacher or school administrator.
ESPN 100.9-FM (WLUN, Pinconning) is a 24-hour all-sports station owned by the non-profit Michigan Baseball Foundation. The station is the flagship station of Great Lakes Loons baseball and carries a weekday lineup of Mike and Mike in the Morning, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, SVP & Russillo and Crunch Time with Jared Sandler. ESPN 100.9-FM also carries the Saginaw Valley League Football and Basketball Games of the Week, Michigan State athletics, Saginaw Valley State athletics and the NFL Sunday Doubleheader.
