Weekend Wrap-up

Last weekend the Storm had it tough facing off against the third place team in the conference the Owen Sound Attack back to back on Friday and Saturday, then taking on local rivals the Kitchener Ranger on Sunday January 27 to finish off the weekend.

On Friday night it was a heated battle against the Attack. The first period was action packed and fast paced with only two penalties being awarded and no goals being scored. The second period got off to a phenomenal start when Brock McGinn scored his 16th of the season only a minute in. The Attack charged back three minutes later with Holden Cook netting his 12th of the season assisted by Cody Ceci and Kyle Hope. The match up remained intense as both teams battled for supremacy. It would be the Storm that persevered as Brock McGinn scored his second of the night and the game winner as the Storm over came the Attack 2-1.

The next night the Storm traveled to Owen Sound for the back end of the home and home against the Attack. The game started out slow with both teams still recovering from the battle that was waged the night before. It as all Storm after the first as they scored five unanswered goals and would go on to defeat the Attack 5-0 for their seventh win in a row. Posting his sixth shutout of the season, Garret Sparks broke the Storm's all time season record of shutouts in one season set by Thomas McCollum with five in 2006-07. He was named third star of the game.

Sunday night at the Sleeman Centre, the Storm faced off against the Kitchener Rangers in front of a jam packed Sleeman Center crowd of 4,865. Looking to make it seven in a row, against their bitter rivals, this match was guaranteed to be heated. The first period was action packed with both teams getting opportunities to come out on top as six penalties were awarded to each team by the end of the first. Kitchener managed to capitalize on one of those opportunities as Matt Puempel scored on a power play with five minutes remaining in the first period. The Storm would answer back at the start of the second when Tanner Richard was dragged down on breakaway giving him a penalty shot two minutes into the second. The crowd erupted as Richard soared down the ice and netted his seventh of the season, making it a one all game. Kitchener would respond two minutes later when Josh Sterk would slip one by Sparks making it 2-1 Kitchener. The game got more heated as the minutes counted down and Cody McNaughton would tie up the game at two with less then four minutes remaining in the second. The Rangers would answer back when Ryan Murphy wired a shot under the crossbar a minute later and despite a valiant effort by the Storm the score would remain 3-2 as Guelph's winning streak was shattered.

Hy-Grade Steel Roofing Player of the Week

The Guelph Storm announced today that goaltender Garret Sparks is the Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 27th.

Sparks was solid in all three appearances this past weekend posting a goals against average of 1.33 and a save percentage of 0.956. On Friday, he made 22 saves, letting in just one, in the Storm's 2-1 victory over the Owen Sound Attack. Saturday in Owen Sound, the Maple Leafs' prospect stood on his head stopping 38 shots and earning a shutout in the Storm's 5-0 victory over the Attack. Posting his sixth shutout of the season, Sparks broke the Storm's all time season record of shutouts in one season set by Thomas McCollum with five in 2006-07. He was named third star of the game. Sunday afternoon against the Rangers, Sparks made 28 saves in the Storm's 3-2 loss to the Rangers.

The Elmhurst, IL native currently has a record of 25-9-0-4 with a goals against average of 2.52 and a 0.921 save percentage. He sits eighth overall in the league in goals against average, sixth in save percentage and is tied with Jordan Binnington of the Owen Sound Attack for the most shutouts. Sparks was instrumental in the Storm's recent seven game winning streak winning all seven match ups and posting a goals against average of 1.43 and a save percentage of .946.

Next up, the Storm play a home and home against the Spitfires with the first game being played at the Sleeman Centre on Friday, February 1st. They then travel to Windsor on Sunday for a 2:05pm puck drop.

Storm Surge in Attendance

The Guelph Storm's surge on the ice this season has been equalled by the surge in crowds as the club's attendance through 24 games is currently at an all-time high.

Through 24 home games, the Guelph Storm is averaging 4,193 fans per game including a recent stretch of home dates that has seen 10 sell-out, or standing room only crowds in their last 14 events (beginning with the sold-out Subway Super Series Game on November 8th) and an average attendance during that period of 4,574 per game.

Playing in the 12th largest market (among 17 Ontario based OHL teams), the Storm currently ranks 6th in average attendance.

Served by the Storm Yesterday at Bobby O'Brien's and Opus

Last night Storm players took on a different role trading in their sticks and skates for their sneakers and smiles. Fans who purchased a ticket to last night's event go t their meal served to them by members of the Storm.

An annual event, Served by the Storm proceeds will go to support the Guelph Storm Adopt-a-School program, which benefits elementary school students in the Guelph and Surrounding Area. Stay tuned to guelphstorm.com for pictures from this fun night!
