Colorado Rapids News Release

TUCSON, Ariz. (Tuesday, January 29, 2012) - The Colorado Rapids played their first match of the 2013 preseason today, falling 3-1 to the Portland Timbers as part of The Desert Friendlies presented by FC Tucson in at the Kino Sports Complex in Arizona. Colorado rookie Deshorn Brown, the 6th overall selection in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, scored the only Rapids goal of the day on a header in the 88th minute.

The Rapids started an experienced group that included Matt Pickens, Drew Moor, Brian Mullan, and Pablo Mastroeni, Hendry Thomas and MartÃ-n Rivero, as well as defender Anthony Wallace, who is returning from injuries that kept him out of most of 2011 and the entire 2012 season. Colorado was forced to make one change in the first half, when Rivero left due to a foot injury in the 44th minute; he will be evaluated and further information will be made public when available.

Head Coach Oscar Pareja used an entirely new group in the second half that included several rookies and trialists. After going down 3-0, the Rapids' three SuperDraft picks, Brown, Kory Kindle and Dillon Powers, connected to put the Rapids on the board. Powers received the ball from forward Andre Akpan in the center of the Timbers half and played the ball to Kindle, whose left-footed cross was driven home by a Brown header.

The Rapids have two remaining games in Tucson this week, facing the Houston Dynamo on Thursday and the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday before returning to Denver. More information on the matches can be found at www.ColoradoRapids.com.
