Wichita to Host Milwaukee, Chicago in DoubleheaderJanuary 23, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Wichita Wings
Wichita will kick off the doubleheader by taking on the league leading Milwaukee Wave Friday night. The Wave lost two of their first three games to begin the season, but have been on fire as of late claiming wins in their last 12 games. This will be the third meeting between the two clubs, with the Wave currently leading the series 2-0 off with a 12-4 victory in Wichita and 12-6 defeat in Milwaukee earlier this season. Last week, the Wave defeated the Soul 9-5, with consistent scoring in all four quarters coming from several different players. The Wave currently sit atop the MISL standings despite not having any of their players ranked within the top 10 scorers in the league. Most of Milwaukee's victories have not come by large margins, winning by an average of only 3 points per match this season. The Wave defense, however, is allowing less than 8 points a game; a factor crucial for Wichita to break down in order to come out with a win.
Saturday, Wichita will look for revenge against the Chicago Soul after a difficult loss on the road last Monday. Led by Chile, who totaled 13 points, Chicago raced out to a 15-0 lead hitting goals from all over the pitch. Andrew Hoxie would finally put the Wings on the board at the ten minute mark of the second quarter with a tap in off a missed three-point goal from Tiguinho. Wichita came out on fire in the third with newcomer Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Berenzon scoring goals assisted by Chris Lemons and Michael Mesle with a three-point goal. Berenzon would add to his previous goal with a three pointer in the 12th minute, leaving Wichita down only three points going into the final quarter, Soul leading 15-12. The Wings could not keep the momentum in the fourth quarter however, and the Soul pulled away to claim a 23-14 win. Wichita and Chicago have now split the two game series this season and will play two more matches to complete the series this Saturday and next Thursday, January 31.
Players to Watch
Geison returned from his two game suspension in Chicago with two assists, but neither he nor team captain Freddy Moojen were able to put any points on the board against the Soul. Look for both players, along with a rejuvenated Andrew Hoxie, to put pressure on two determined clubs that will be entering Wichita this weekend.
Chicago Soul Attack vs. Wings Defense
Wichita cannot allow Chicago to run away with the match like they did on Monday. It was clear the Wings missed star defender Victor Quiroz against the Soul, as he was suspended as a result of a five card accumulation. If the Wings have any chance of defeating those two clubs, they will need to provide a solid defense that can stifle scoring opportunities and control the pace of the match.
