Titans Duel Cinncy for a Point; Fall in Shootout, 4-3

January 20, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release

Trenton, NJ - The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, lost to the Cincinnati Cyclones for the second time in two days at the Sun National Bank Center, 4-3 in a shootout, as a late goal from Derrick Pallis helped the Titans salvage a point.

Cincinnati (24-14-3-1, 52 pts) got off to a quick start thanks to Josh McFadden, who pushed a goal past Scott Wedgewood (12-12-2-1, 31 saves) just 58 seconds in for the only goal of the opening frame.

Being shutout last night, the Titans (16-18-3-3, 38 pts) finally solved Michael Houser (6-3, 36 saves) after exactly 85 minutes, dating back to the start of last night's contest, when Jacob Drewiske buried a one-timer from Mike Ulrich in the top right corner. The assist was Ulrich's first point as a Titan.

Later in the second, Stephen Schultz blasted a shot past Houser on the power play to give the Titans a 2-1 lead. Schultz's 13thof the season, and eighth on the power play, was assisted by Tyler Hostetter and Jacob Cepis. The Titans would take that lead into the second intermission, but not much further.

The Titans surrendered another early goal in the third to a falling Mike Embach, who found a way to push the puck past Wedgewood at the 3:16 mark to tie the game at two. Cincinatti struck again to grab a 3-2 lead shortly after when a centering pass from Wilson deflected in off of Hostetter's skate at 6:31 for a power play goal.

David MacDonald took a late penalty for the Cyclones, and with less than a minute remaining and Wedgewood pulled for an extra attacker, Derrick Pallis launched a laser through traffic that found the top right corner to knot the score at three and send the game to overtime. Hostetter and Cepis each earned their second helpers of the night on the tying goal.

Neither team could find a winner in the extra session, and the Cyclones made quick work of the Titans in the shootout. Ellington and Wilson both beat Wedgewood and Houser stopped four Titans attempts. Shootout woes continue to plague the Titans. They are now 1-3 in shootouts this season, dropping their last two after topping Elmira in a wild 7-6 contest on December 1st. Trenton is now 1-9 in shootouts dating back to the start of the 2011-2012 campaign, when they changed from the Devils back to the Titans.

Trenton did outshoot the visitors, 39-35, and connected twice on six power play opportunities while the Cyclones man-advantage was 1-for-5 on the night.

With the All-Star break on the horizon, the Titans will be back in action next Friday, when they host the Las Vegas Wranglers at the Sun National Bank Center. Trenton will then clash with division rival Wheeling at home on Saturday (7:05 pm) before heading to Elmira for a 4:05 contest with the Nailers on Sunday, Jan. 27th. As always, those games can be heard on the home of the Titans, 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at 1077thebronc.com, with the voice of the Titans, "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos. Be sure to tune in Tuesday evening at 8 pm for the Trenton Titans Coaches Show, broadcast live on The Bronc from Killarney's Publick House in Hamilton, NJ.
