Dwayne De Rosario and Dejan Jakovic Called up to the Canada Men's National TeamJanuary 18, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - D.C. United
This is De Rosario's first international call-up since suffering a Grade III MCL sprain in the first half of Canada's 2-0 loss to Panama on September 11, 2012 during 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying. Four days before the injury, the United captain netted the game-winner in the 77th minute in a 1-0 win over Panama. The goal, De Rosario's 20th for Canada, made him the nation's all-time goal-scoring leader. Since his senior team debut at 20-years-old in 1998, De Rosario has made 71 appearances (58 starts) for the nation. In 2012, the Canadian Soccer Association nominated De Rosario for the BMO Male Canadian Player of the Year Award.
Coming off of an MLS MVP and Budweiser Golden Boot season in 2011, De Rosario maintained impressive statistics in 2012, despite missing the final seven regular-season games due to injury. Through 26 games played (25 starts), the 34-year-old logged close to 2,200 minutes, tallying seven goals and a team-high 12 assists. Last July, the United skipper was selected to captain the 2012 MLS All-Star side - his sixth All-Star selection in the past seven seasons - that defeated 2012 European champions Chelsea FC 3-2.
De Rosario was acquired from the New York Red Bulls midseason on June 27, 2011, recording a brace and a hat trick against former clubs San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC, respectively, en route to becoming the 2011 MLS MVP.
Jakovic was most recently called up for two 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in October 2012, a 3-0 win over Cuba on October 12 and an 8-1 loss to Honduras on October 16. Although Jakovic was named to the qualifying roster, he did not feature in either game. In total, Jakovic has appeared in 12 fixtures for Canada, logging 11 starts in the process.
After recovering from two early-season injuries, Jakovic became a mainstay in the Black-and-Red back four, playing in 23 games with 21 starts and a goal to his name. Jakovic originally signed with the club on February 27, 2009 from Red Star Belgrade (Serbia), and is the team's longest-tenured player behind Chris Pontius. After a solid 2012 MLS campaign, the defender signed a new contract in November of 2012.
