Bob Gibson Announced as 2013 IPMR Legend at the Ballpark VIP

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and IPMR (Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) have announced that the 2013 Legends at the Ballpark event will welcome Hall of Famer and St. Louis Cardinals legend Bob Gibson on Saturday, June 8 as the Chiefs host Quad Cities at 6:30 p.m. with post-game fireworks.

Gibson, a two-time Cy Young Award winner and 1968 NL MVP, was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1981 and named to MLB's All-Century Team in 1999. In 17 Major League seasons he won 251 games and struck out 3,117 batters while posting a career 2.91 ERA. He was named to nine All-Star teams and won nine Gold Glove awards while also hitting 24 home runs. The right-hander won two games in the 1964 World Series, threw three complete games in the 1967 World Series and struck out a record 17 batters in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series. He posted a career 7-2 record in the World Series with a 1.89 ERA in nine starts and eight complete games as the Cardinals won two championships in the 1960s. Gibson posted a modern baseball record 1.12 ERA in 1968 while going 22-9 with 28 complete games, 13 shutouts and 268 strikeouts. For his career, the Omaha, NE native threw 255 complete games and 56 shutouts while amassing 3884 1/3 innings. His jersey number 45 was retired by the Cardinals and Gibson also played basketball at Creighton University and for the Harlem Globetrotters.

June 8 is the 11th annual IPMR Legends at the Ballpark event, and past featured guests have been: Hall of Fame Manager Whitey Herzog (2003), Hall of Famer Lou Brock (2004), Hall of Famer and former Chiefs Manager Ryne Sandberg (2005), Steve Stone (2006), Cubs legend and radio announcer Ron Santo (2007), Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter (2008), former Cubs and Cardinals closer Lee Smith (2009), Cubs Hall of Famers Fergie Jenkins (2010), Andre Dawson (2011) and Ernie Banks (2012).

IPMR facilities are located in Peoria and the surrounding communities. For over 60 years, IPMR's professional staff of physicians and therapists have improved function and quality of life for persons suffering from injury or illness. The Legends at the Ballpark event takes place in the Pepsi Picnic Plaza and includes a pre-game presentation by Gibson along with a silent auction and raffle. Gibson will sign autographs on the concourse for approximately one hour during the Chiefs - River Bandits game. Proceeds from autographs go to the Rehabilitation Foundation of IPMR, a not-for-profit organization.
