Whitecaps FC Hold Two Top Ten Selections

January 16, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS) Vancouver Whitecaps FC

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC are set to bolster their roster tomorrow, January 17, 2013, at the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, presented by adidas, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Whitecaps FC currently hold two top ten selections, fifth and tenth overall, in tomorrow's draft, which will be held at 9 a.m. PT live on TSN2. The 38-pick 2013 MLS SuperDraft will also be streamed live online on whitecapsfc.com, MLSSoccer.com, and YouTube.com.

First Round

No. 5 - Acquired from Philadelphia Union, as well as allocation money, on June 26, 2012, for Vancouver's first position in the MLS allocation ranking and the "˜Caps second-round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft

No. 10 - Vancouver's natural First Round Selection

Following the draft, b-roll and interviews will be available on the MLS FTP site. In addition, Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi, head coach Martin Rennie, as well as the selected players will be available via conference call around 10:30 a.m. PT. Whitecaps FC currently have two key players on their roster from previous MLS SuperDrafts - 2011 first overall selection Omar Salgado and 2012 second overall pick Darren Mattocks .

Winger/striker Salgado, 19, has scored one goal and added three assists in 24 appearances with Vancouver, while striker Mattocks, 22, has scored eight goals and added one assist in 24 appearances. Last season, both Salgado and Mattocks were named in MLSsoccer.com top 24 Under 24.

Vancouver also holds five picks (10th, 11th, 29th, 48th, and 67th overall) in the four-round, 76-pick MLS Supplemental Draft, which will take place on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, via conference call.

Whitecaps FC open their 2013 preseason camp on Monday, January 21, at Burnaby Lake West. The "˜Caps third season in MLS is set to kick off on Saturday, March 2, when they host Canadian arch-rivals Toronto FC at BC Place.
