BayHawks 2013 MLL Schedule Announced
January 14, 2013 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release
ANNAPOLIS, MD . - The Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced their 2013 MLL schedule today. Chesapeake will travel to Rochester to take on the Rattlers for the season opener on April 27th. The Bayhawks return for their fifth summer at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD with their home opener on Saturday, May 4th against their newly named rival the New York Lizards. The 2013 MLL regular season will consist of 14 weeks, 7 home games and 7 away games.
The Bayhawks finished the 2012 campaign as the MLL Champions in a captivating win over the Boston Cannons (16-10) in the semi-finals and then another exciting battle against the Denver Outlaws (16-6) in the finals. The Bayhawks went into the 2012 Championship Weekend in Boston with a 10-4 record and hungry to take back the Steinfeld Trophy. The long season of hard work and skillful player management by head coach Dave Cottle proved to be successful as the Bayhawks became the only franchise to hoist the trophy for the fourth time in league history.
"We are excited to get started off the great momentum from last season's championship," Cottle stated. "We have only scratched the surface of our potential and we look forward to becoming the best team possible. There have been a lot of improvements throughout the league the off-season with trades and draft picks. We are excited for the challenge and are ready to get started at training camp this spring."
To start the season, Chesapeake travels to Rochester for the first of two meetings with the Rattlers. During the 2012 season, the Bayhawks and the Rattlers split the series losing 12-8 at home and winning 13-7 on the road.
The Bayhawks will face the Lizards in their home opener on Saturday, May 4th in Annapolis where they look to add another W to the all-time series of 13-11 with the Lizards. In 2012, the Bayhawks swept the two game series but these two teams have had an epic history of close battles. Before the Bayhawks overtook the Outlaws in the 2012 Championship, the two teams had met in all five championships that the either had ever won, Chesapeake winning in 2002, 2005, and 2010 and Long Island winning in 2001 and 2003. The home opener will be highlighted by an exciting tailgate celebration presented by Lexus and a post-game fireworks display, as well as more exciting events to be announced.
Next the Bayhawks travel to Boston on Saturday, May 18th pitting the two defending champions against each other. Chesapeake has played more games versus Boston than any team in MLL history: 32 total contests including playoffs. The Bayhawks trail 12-14 to the Cannons in regular season games yet in the playoffs, the Bayhawks lead 4-2. Last season, the Bayhawks beat the Cannons at home 14-13 but were later avenged in Boston 16-13.
After a league-wide bye week during Memorial Day Weekend, Chesapeake returns home on Saturday, June 1st to take on the Hamilton Nationals. The Bayhawks won the series last season and look to continue that streak this season. With just a short break, the Bayhawks travel to New York for their second bout with the Lizards on Thursday, June 6th.
A championship game re-match will take place in Annapolis versus the Denver Outlaws on Saturday, June 15th for their first of two contests this season. The Bayhawks and the Outlaws split the series during the 2012 regular season but Chesapeake pulled ahead in the battle for the Steinfeld Trophy. The game is sure to be an exciting one with these two rivals.
Following the re-match, the Bayhawks will begin an arduous three week stint on the road, visiting the Charlotte Hounds on Saturday, June 22nd, the Hamilton Nationals on Saturday, June 29th, and then ending in Ohio on Saturday, July 6th.
All teams in the MLL will have a bye week the second weekend in July due to the MLL All-Star Game which will be held in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, July 13th at 7:30 PM. The 2012 game, held in Boca Raton, FL, drew a crowd of more than 7,854 fans.
After the MLL All-Star game, Chesapeake returns home for a Thursday night match up versus the Cannons on July 18th at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The weeknight game will allow for a unique networking experience and set the stage to bring out corporate outings from the area. For their last road game of the regular season, the Bayhawks travel to Denver for a Saturday afternoon game on July 27th.
The Bayhawks return to Annapolis for the final pair of home matches with the Rattlers and Hounds. The Bayhawks will host Rochester on Saturday, August 3rd before concluding the regular season at home on Saturday, August 10th against Charlotte.
The 2013 MLL Championship Weekend will be held at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. on August 24th and 25th. The weekend will begin with the semifinals on Saturday, August 24th, followed by the final on Sunday, August 25th. The event will also feature the MLL Fan Zone an interactive area with fun and games for lacrosse fans of all ages. The Bayhawks will look to qualify for their fourth consecutive postseason berth.
Throughout the summer the Bayhawks will be hosting a variety of promotional events in coordination with their home games. In 2012, the Bayhawks hosted a Reichardt Foundation Night, a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Night, and a Military Appreciation Night. These nights raised a good deal of money for the organizations. In 2013, the Bayhawks will continue to support local charity organizations through their promotional nights and more details will be released as the schedule of events for 2013 is set.
