Ontario spotted O'Connell immediate goal support, scoring on the first shift of the game. Brodie Sheahan scored from the left circle 11 seconds into the contest to give Ontario a 1-0 lead. ECHL leading goal scorer Colton Yellow Horn then added to the advantage at 4:51 of the opening period to give Ontario a 2-0 lead after one period. The Reign outshot the Aces 10-6 in the period.
Alaska had an opportunity to get back into the game in the second period when Zach Harrison was tripped on a breakaway by Ontario's Cameron Burt. Harrison was awarded a penalty shot at 5:13 of the period, but could not beat O'Connell who kept the Reign in front. Late in the period Yellow Horn scored his second of the night and 26th of the season on a power play to make it 3-0 Reign.
The Aces outshot the Reign 8-1 in the third period, but O'Connell kept them at bay for most of the frame. Alaska finally spoiled his shutout bid at 19:24 when Jarred Smith batted a puck out of mid-air, past O'Connell's stick side.
Gerald Coleman (14-3) had a nine-game winning streak snapped, making 20 saves on 23 shots in the loss. O'Connell (1-0) made 20 saves on 21 shots for the win. The Aces went 0-4 on the power play and the Reign were 0-6. Alaska was outshot by Ontario 23-21 in the game.
