January 13, 2013 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (37-5-1-0) extended their winning streak to 14 games with an 8-0 victory in Everett Saturday against the Silvertips (17-25-0-2).

The 14 straight wins are just one behind the team record of 15, set twice, first from December 2, 1979 - January 11, 1980, and then from January 9, 1998 - February 10, 1998.

Brendan Burke posted his second shutout of the season, turning away all 31 shots the Silvertips fired at him.

The Hawks scored the lone goal of the first period when Chase De Leo struck at the 6:59 mark to give Portland a 1-0 lead they took into the second.

From there the Hawks exploded for three second period goals, beginning with a power play goal from Troy Rutkowski 4:32 into the frame, his fifth straight game with a goal. Brendan Leipsic scored at the 7:26 mark to make it 3-0, then Portland went ahead 4-0 when Nic Petan scored a power play goal at the 14:06 mark.

The Hawks' offense continued clicking throughout the third, as Portland added a shorthanded goal from Taylor Peters, a power play goal from Rutkowski for his second of the game, and a pair of goals from Taylor Leier, including one shorthanded, as the Hawks finished with the 8-0 win.

Special teams were a big factor in the game, with the Hawks going 3-6 on the power play and a perfect 7-7 on the penalty kill, with two shorthanded goals.

Several Winterhawks players extended lengthy point streaks in tonight's game, including all three players on the team's top line.

Leipsic now has points in 12 straight games, with seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points in that span. Petan now has a seven-game point streak, with five goals and nine assists for 14 points, while Rattie has points in all four games since returning from the World Junior Championship, with eight assists.

Petan leads the WHL with 74 points on the season, while Leipsic is second with 71 points. Rattie has moved back into the league's top-10 as he's tied for ninth with 55 points.

Along with goals in five straight games, Rutkowski now has a seven-game point streak overall, with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in that span.

The Hawks are off until Friday, when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7 p.m. in the Rose Garden.
